Michael DiPietro had plenty of reasons to celebrate Thursday night. But his first NHL shutout carried a meaning that went far beyond the milestone.

The Boston Bruins goaltender stopped all 28 shots he faced in a 6-0 victory over the Nashville Predators at TD Garden. The performance came on Hockey Fights Cancer night, making an already special moment even more personal for DiPietro, who lost his mother to cancer when he was five years old.
"It means a lot on Hockey Fights Cancer night," DiPietro told reporters after the game. "...[I]t means a lot, but also to my family and everyone back home. I just want to make them proud, and obviously this is a really special moment."
The 27-year-old's first career shutout came just days after he earned his first NHL victory in a 4-2 win over the Anaheim Ducks. After years of working toward a consistent opportunity at hockey's highest level, DiPietro has made the most of his recent starts.

Thursday's milestone, however, was about more than his progress in the NHL.
DiPietro acknowledged the emotions surrounding the occasion and how much it meant to share the moment with his family. His mother's memory was especially close to him on a night dedicated to those affected by cancer.
DiPietro has tried to approach each opportunity with gratitude, knowing how much it means to finally be playing at the NHL level.
"I think just gratitude, just being grateful for each and every single day," DiPietro said. "Like I said, a dream come true for me to be here, and I don't want to wish the days away."

The goaltender added that he has tried to enjoy every part of the experience, from practices to game nights, while staying grounded in the moment.
That mindset helped him navigate the pressure of pursuing a shutout. DiPietro admitted that thoughts about the possibility began creeping into his head as the game progressed, but he focused on resetting after each whistle rather than looking too far ahead.
When the final horn sounded, the Bruins celebrated the accomplishment with their goaltender. DiPietro took pride in being part of a group that continues to build momentum.
He also knew the puck from his first shutout would be worth keeping.

When asked about the milestone souvenir, DiPietro joked that it might end up under his pillow, just as the puck from his first NHL win had.
His first NHL shutout arrived on a night when the hockey community came together to recognize the families and individuals whose lives have been affected by cancer. For DiPietro, that cause is deeply personal.
He did not try to overcomplicate what the milestone meant to him. He wanted to help his team win, celebrate the moment with those closest to him and honor his mother's memory.
After 28 saves and a memorable night at TD Garden, DiPietro had earned a milestone he will never forget. And as he celebrated with his teammates, the accomplishment carried a message that extended beyond the ice: He hoped the moment would make his family proud.
