Michael Porter Jr. knows he’ll need a co-star by his side if the Brooklyn Nets hope to take a step forward next season. The 28-year-old recently hinted that the Nets’ front office may be aggressive in adding backcourt talent this summer.
“Can I be a number one option on a championship-caliber team? I’m not about to sit here and say that I don’t think I can take on a big responsibility on a championship team, because I do, but I definitely would need some help,” Porter said on The Road Trippin Podcast. “Even with the crazy shots I was shooting this year, I was still almost 40 percent [from three], and I probably got only a handful of wide-open shots. Team’s whole game plan was to make sure that I didn’t get an open shot. So if I got another guy over here who really is able to create and draw some attention, now I’m getting two or three wide-open threes per game. I think it would really help us. And that’s kind of what we’re… You know, I’ve talked to the front office, and that would be a big thing for us. I think we’re gonna get a good draft pick, and then we’ve got the most money in the NBA to go get a really good playmaking two-guard or point guard.”
Despite playing alongside an NBA-record five rookie first-round picks, Porter turned in a career-best season this year, averaging 24.3 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 3.0 assists on .463/.363/.859 shooting splits. He was one of three players to average 24-plus points and seven-plus rebounds on over 46 percent shooting from the field and 36 percent from three, alongside Nikola Jokic and Luka Doncic .
Will Nets add co-star alongside Michael Porter Jr. as they continue rebuild?
Without control of their 2027 first-round pick, many within league circles expect the Nets to be aggressive on the trade and free agent markets this summer. Brooklyn has an NBA-best nine tradable first-round picks and nearly $45 million in cap space.
However, general manager Sean Marks said at his exit interview that any move the Nets make will have to fit their timeline.
“I think it depends a little on what becomes available. You just never know,” Marks said when asked about win-now moves. “We’ve put this Nets team and franchise in a place to be able to be opportunistic. Does that fit our timeline? Does this particular trade work for us right now? I mean, you can always add talent, but does that talent fit our approach and the development of these young guys and fit in with the group that we have? Those are discussions I look forward to having with Jordi [Fernandez], the rest of the coaching staff, the front office, and mostly, Joe [Tsai] — when we want to add and how we want to add.”
The Nets have a 14.0 percent chance to land the No. 1 pick in the 2026 draft and a 52.1 percent chance of landing within the top four. This year’s class features highly-touted prospects such as AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson, Cam Boozer and Caleb Wilson. Meanwhile, notable young free agents include Austin Reaves , Peyton Watson , Ayo Dosunmu , Anfernee Simons , Tari Eason , Bennedict Mathurin , Coby White and Quentin Grimes , among others.
It remains to be seen whether the Nets will gauge trade interest for Porter this summer. The soon-to-be-28-year-old is entering the final year of his contract at $40.8 million and will be eligible for an extension in July.
