The NCAA adopted its new "five-for-five" eligibility rule back on June 23, where any athlete from the high school graduating class of 2022 can return to play a fifth season of collegiate sports in 2026.
On Tuesday morning, Michigan men's basketball head coach Mike Boynton Jr. spoke with the local media and made a pretty big statement about the eligibility of former Wolverine Roddy Gayle Jr. — who was a member of the 2022 recruiting class — for the 2026-27 season.
"If there's an opportunity for Roddy (Gayle) to be back and he wants to be back, we certainly will have him back," Boynton said.
The conversations around Michigan men's basketball instantly turned to Gayle, who was with the team the past two seasons after transferring in from Ohio State. Gayle was a major contributor for the Wolverines off the bench last season in pursuit of a national championship, as he was the gel that bonded the first and second years under former head coach Dusty May.
Finishing with 7.3 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game as a senior in the 2025-26 season, Gayle showed major improvements after his junior year and was a key contributor off the bench, alongside guard Trey McKenney, who is back for his sophomore season at Michigan.
Gayle's leadership for the Wolverines can't be understated the past two seasons either, and his intangible efforts on and off the court are what led the team to a 2025 Big Ten Tournament championship, the 2025-26 Big Ten regular-season championship, two Sweet Sixteen appearances, a Final Four appearance and the 2026 national championship.
Boynton seemingly has open arms to the possibility of Gayle coming back for his fifth season of eligibility, and that possibility would be massive for the Wolverines with new contributors — both in the true freshman class and the transfer portal — up and down the roster.
