Chemistry and continuity are the ultimate currency for any offensive line, but Michigan has had to build both on the fly through the opening stretch of the season. Between injuries, position shifts, and last minute lineup decisions, the unit upfront has undergone plenty of shuffling.
Despite those early challenges, guard Brady Norton believes the group is steadily finding its groove. Meeting with the media on Tuesday evening, Norton broke down how Michigan is navigating the changes, sharpening its identity, and preparing for a physical matchup ahead.
When tackle Andrew Sprague was ruled out ahead of Michigan's last contest, the line was forced to adapt quickly. Blake Frazier flipped to right tackle while Evan Link kicked back over to his original position at left tackle.
Norton acknowledged that missing Sprague sucked, calling him a heck of a player, but pointed to the depth in the room as the reason the group did not miss a beat. He noted that Frazier and Link executed their roles well, allowing the offense to keep moving forward without hesitation.
For Norton, settling into a singular position and getting full game reps has made a world of difference. After dealing with injuries last season and splitting time early on, getting into a rhythm without constantly rotating in and out has allowed him to stay warm and play with more confidence. The transition from tackle to right guard brought its own physical learning curve, forcing him to rebuild strength in his left leg to balance out his stance, but he has embraced the grueling nature of playing inside against bigger defenders.
Looking ahead, Michigan faces a stark contrast in defensive styles this weekend. After seeing heavy blitzes, twists, and odd fronts against teams like Oklahoma and UTEP, the Wolverines now turn their attention to an Iowa defense that thrives on simplicity and execution.
Norton praised Iowa for doing simple very well with a traditional four man front, emphasizing that the game will come down to raw, one on one battles in the trenches.
To win those matchups, Norton believes the offensive line needs to stop overthinking and just play fast. He admitted that the unit got bogged down early in the season by focusing too much on pre snap indicators rather than letting their athleticism take over. When they simplified their approach against Oklahoma, the run game immediately responded with nearly 150 yards on the ground.
Cleaning up penalties like holding and false starts remains a top priority, especially as the offense works to revive its perimeter run game. Norton pointed out that getting back to the physical mindset of a classic Michigan offensive line is the key to unlocking the full potential of the offense.
If the line can establish control early, execute their assignments, and keep hitting the defense in the mouth for four full quarters, everything else will fall into place.
