Michigan began its national championship defense with a victory Monday night, defeating Oakland 84–68 at Crisler Center to open the 2026–27 season. The result gave Mike Boynton Jr. a winning start in his official debut as the Wolverines' head coach.
For a program navigating considerable change, opening night offered an encouraging introduction to its new personnel. Michigan entered the season ranked No. 16 after losing three NBA lottery selections and replacing Dusty May, who departed for the Dallas Mavericks. Monday provided the first opportunity to begin establishing an identity beyond last season's championship team.

J.P. Estrella supplied one of Michigan's clearest positives. The Tennessee transfer led the Wolverines with 13 points and nine rebounds at halftime, helping Michigan build a 47–36 advantage. He secured his double-double just 15 seconds into the second half, immediately demonstrating the interior production he can bring to his new team.
That contribution carried significance given Michigan's offseason departures. Morez Johnson Jr., Yaxel Lendeborg and Aday Mara all moved on to the NBA, leaving substantial responsibilities for a rebuilt frontcourt. Estrella's opening performance offered an early indication that Michigan has another reliable option around the basket.
Oakland, however, did not disappear after halftime. The Golden Grizzlies pulled within 49–43 with 15:57 remaining, cutting Michigan's cushion to six points and keeping pressure on the home team. An 11-point halftime advantage had become a competitive second-half test.
Michigan subsequently regained separation, with freshman Quinn Costello providing a perimeter spark. His shooting helped push the Wolverines' lead to 14 points, giving Michigan breathing room after Oakland's push. Alongside Estrella's work inside, that contribution gave the Wolverines meaningful production from newcomers in their first regular-season appearance.

The game offered a useful first lesson for Boynton's group: building an advantage and maintaining control require different kinds of execution. Oakland's second-half response gave Michigan something concrete to evaluate, even as the Wolverines ultimately delivered the opening victory their home crowd expected.
Michigan's schedule now becomes considerably more demanding. The Wolverines head to Boston to face No. 4 UConn on Friday at TD Garden in a rematch of April's national championship game. That matchup will provide a much stronger early measuring stick for a roster blending returning championship experience with several new pieces.
Monday's opener supplied a foundation: a productive debut from Estrella, timely shooting from Costello and a successful first result under Boynton. The next challenge is turning those promising stretches into a more complete performance against one of the nation's best opponents.
