Winning a Super Bowl can earn an NFL head coach a little bit of leeway. ... some room to relax and relent.
Apparently, Mike Macdonald isn't interested in using any of his.
The Seattle Seahawks are only months removed from reaching the mountaintop, but Macdonald has spent much of the offseason making it abundantly clear that the 2025 team isn't coming back.

That Lombardi Trophy isn't going to win Seattle anything in 2026, either.
And if anyone needed a reminder of just how serious Macdonald is about maintaining the standards that got the Seahawks there ... Derick Hall learned the hard way.
During the latest episode of HBO's *Hard Knocks*, Hall got a bit too close to quarterback Sam Darnold during a training camp drill.
Macdonald wasn't pleased.
And then Hall did it again.
This time, Seattle's usually cerebral head coach had seen enough.
"You can complain all the [expletive] you want," Macdonald told Hall. "You can [expletive] all you want but it turns out I'm running the [expletive] practice."

On the surface, the confrontation is about something relatively simple. Darnold is Seattle's quarterback, quarterbacks aren't supposed to get hit during practice and Macdonald wasn't going to tolerate his edge rusher putting the most important player on his offense at unnecessary risk.
But this wasn't really about Darnold.
At least, not entirely.
It was another glimpse at the culture Macdonald has spent the past two years constructing in Seattle — and perhaps more importantly, the lengths he's willing to go to protect it now that the Seahawks are defending Super Bowl champions.

Macdonald has talked plenty about that challenge this offseason.
"We're not defending anything," he said.
New year. New team. Same standards, and those standards have become increasingly identifiable.
The Seahawks have built their identity around Macdonald's "12 As One" philosophy , an emphasis on connection that has been accompanied by what players describe as an unusually demanding work environment.

Jarran Reed has called that work ethic one of Seattle's "non-negotiables."
Leonard Williams has credited Macdonald's willingness to hold himself accountable with helping create an environment where players accept the same treatment.

That's an important distinction.
Accountability is considerably easier to preach when everything is going wrong. Maintaining it after you've just proven your methods can produce a championship?
That's where cultures can get tested.
Hall is one of Seattle's own, too. He isn't some fringe player Macdonald can easily make an example out of. The Seahawks rewarded the edge rusher with a contract extension earlier this offseason after he established himself as an important piece of one of football's best defenses.
None of that bought him a different standard.
Get too close to Darnold once? You're going to hear about it.

Do it again?
Well ... turns out Macdonald is running the practice.
There was no Super Bowl exemption. No veteran exemption. No newly-paid-player exemption.
Just the standard.
And for a Seahawks team attempting to accomplish the exceedingly difficult task of staying on top, that might be the most encouraging part of the entire exchange.
Macdonald spent two years establishing what Seattle was supposed to look like. The Seahawks eventually became good enough at being themselves to win a championship.
Now comes the harder part: making sure nobody gets comfortable enough to change it.
