Mike McCarthy Shoots Up Odds List for Steelers Next Coach
Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula remans the betting favorite to become the next head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers , but another candidate is rocketing up the boards.
Former Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy , who is interviewing with the team on Wednesday, has shot up the odds boards over the last few days.
McCarthy was not even listed in the first few batches of public odds put forward by BetOnline.com for the Steelers opening following the resignation of Mike Tomlin last Tuesday.
While the early favorite was Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores , Shula took over the top spot fairly early on and remains there, with +125 odds as of Tuesday.
Flores’ odds have remained largely the same at +300, with first Shula and now McCarthy shooting past him. McCarthy went from off the board, to +600 on Monday, to now +150, nearly equal with Shula as of Tuesday.
Flores interviewed in-person with the Steelers on Tuesday. Anthony Weaver , who is the other confirmed in-person interview this week, is down at +2,200. In front of him are another new name, former Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott , who debuted on the list at +600, but is now at +1,200, and former Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury at +2,000.
The Steelers can’t interview Shula until Monday, as the Rams are playing in the NFC Championship Game against the Seattle Seahawks this Sunday.
The rest of the current odds list includes Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter (+4,000), Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy (+5,000), Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman (+5,000) and former Las Vegas Raiders and Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Jon Gruden (+6,600)
