Myles Lewis-Skelly established himself in Arsenal's midfield last season and has continued to feature there for much of this campaign after seemingly losing his place at left-back.
The arrival of Piero Hincapie made a return to defence harder, with Riccardo Calafiori considered the first-choice option on the left. Lewis-Skelly has therefore continued to adapt to a midfield role.
Against Lille, Lewis-Skelly started at left-back , surprising many supporters. Despite not having played there regularly for some time, he performed well and showed he can still contribute in the position.
The youngster will hope the display earns him more minutes, either in midfield or at left-back. Arsenal need players who can compete in different roles, and they regard Lewis-Skelly as an important option in both areas.
His versatility gives Mikel Arteta greater flexibility when selecting the team. With competition for places strong, performances like this could help Lewis-Skelly remain involved throughout the campaign.

Arteta handed Lewis-Skelly his Arsenal debut, and the manager continues to show faith in him. After the match, Arsenal Media reported Arteta's praise for the youngster and the demands of switching positions.
"He always gets love from the coaches, and he deserves massive credit because changing position is not only just what you have to deliver tactically but also the physical element of that, and the kind of efforts you have to make. But I thought he was brilliant, the way he competed, the way he carried himself. He was very consistent except for one action in the game, and that's what we need. Myles is a player with a huge impact on the team."
Arteta highlighted the tactical and physical challenges of changing roles, while praising Lewis-Skelly's consistency and competitive approach. His display against Lille underlined why Arsenal value his versatility.
The chance to play at left-back again could bring Lewis-Skelly further opportunities, while his midfield experience remains another route into the side. Delivering in either position will be important as he looks to secure a regular role in Arteta's plans.
