The Minnesota Golden Gophers have the inside track to a big-time transfer portal recruit.

The name? Kyan Evans.

Evans just played this past season at North Carolina, which has changed coaches this offseason from Hubert Davis to Michael Malone.

That's not the reason that Evans would make sense for Minnesota, though.

His past at Colorado State is why. When Niko Medved left there to become Minnesota's coach for this season, he tried to bring Evans but couldn't pull it off.

TwinCities.com reported Tuesday that Minnesota will try to end up with Evans for a second time — and after a bumpy season at UNC, it might happen this time around.

Evans has played three years of college hoops, including the first two at Colorado State. He didn't start at all as a freshman, but he broke out as a sophomore.

In 2024-25, Evans averaged 10.6 points, 2.9 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 0.8 steals per game for Colorado State. He also shot a blistering 44.6% from 3-point range.

The lone season at North Carolina wasn't as good. Evans averaged 4.0 points and 2.5 assists per game. His 3-point shooting dropped to 30.5%.

It wasn't the best vibes in Chapel Hill this season, and sometimes transfer destinations simply don't work out.

Evans would know in going to Minnesota that he's got a big supporter in his corner already from his past relationship at Colorado State. That might bode well for the Golden Gophers in landing a high-quality point guard.
