There has been smoke surrounding the Minnesota Timberwolves adding a starting-caliber point guard for weeks. At this point it's only a matter of time before some white smoke billows out of the Target Center.
Names discussed have included Ja Morant , Coby White , Darius Garland , and others . What Tim Connelly ultimately does remains to be seen. Given the Timberwolves cap and pick circumstances, they have to get creative.

Coby White discussion continues for MN Timberwolves
The Minnesota Timberwolves have been rolling of late. At 25-13 they have made up for some of their ugly losses. It still remains painfully obvious that Chris Finch's rotation could use a point guard capable of facilitating his offense. The Chicago Bulls have a couple of them, and Evan Sidery is reporting discussions are ongoing.
The Timberwolves and Bulls have continued to hold trade discussions centered around Coby White.
Minnesota is willing to include Rob Dillingham , along with matching salary, to make it happen.
With Minnesota's lack of draft capital, they need to get creative to pull this off. pic.twitter.com/TnMlnMpnPu— Evan Sidery (@esidery) January 9, 2026
Coby White was the 7th overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft . The North Carolina product has spent all seven of his seasons in the NBA have come with the Chicago Bulls.
White took a step forward a couple of years ago. The 2023-24 season saw him average a new career-high 19.1 points per game. He upped that to 20.4 last season, and is at 18.4 points per game this season. He has dished out just less than five dimes a game.

It hasn't been a full season for White as he has played in just 17 games. However, there isn't much of an injury history for him, and he could be the missing puzzle for a team looking to get over the hump .
There's no denying that White would cost the Timberwolves more than his teammate Tre Jones . Making Rob Dillingham available though, could give a rebuilding team an opportunity to develop a potential future star .
Timberwolves one to watch for Ja Morant
While Coby White is a bigger name than Tre Jones, Ja Morant trumps them both. He's got enough baggage to fill an entire suitcase, but the talent is undeniable.
Keep a very close eye on Minnesota and Sacramento for Morant.
If Miami wants to make an all-in move, this would be it.

Shams Charania reported that the Memphis Grizzlies have made Morant available . The fact that the Minnesota is immediately linked to him is noteworthy.

The Timberwolves may have wanted to target a lesser talent early in the season . It's sometimes difficult to pull of significant moves before a franchise believes they are really out of it.
We are now less than a month from the NBA trade deadline, and even the biggest pieces are bubbling to the top. With a chance to win it all, and Anthony Edwards in tow, there should be no stone the Minnesota Timberwolves leave unturned.
