There are some interesting elements that prevented the Minnesota Vikings from fortifying the edge rusher room.
The Minnesota Vikings signed edge rusher Kenny Dyson Jr. to the practice squad Monday, signaling a renewed effort to fortify a position of need, or so they thought. Dyson had a strong training camp, and adding him to the practice squad made all the sense in the world. Then came the news on Tuesday that Dyson's practice squad contract was null and void by the NFL, and he became a free agent once again.
The reason is a fascinating wrinkle in how the league handles roster management.
Dyson had agreed to an injury settlement with the Vikings, which meant he took a lump sum of money in lieu of becoming a free agent again. This is a common practice for players who suffer more minor injuries, something along the lines of a 4-to-6-week absence where they won't be on the active roster once fully healed. What teams will do is pay them the prorated version of their salary for those weeks, and then the player can hit the free agent market at that time.
It's a pretty normal process, but it becomes complicated when a player accepts an injury settlement from a team and then wants to return to that same team. Because the Vikings gave Dyson an injury settlement, he cannot return to Minnesota until 3 weeks after the settlement period expires. For example, if they agreed to a 4-week injury settlement, he would not be able to sign with the Vikings until after Week 7, because the 4 weeks would have to expire and then an additional 3 weeks would follow.
The NFL has this rule in place to prevent teams from circumventing the 53-man roster. Without it, teams could place players on injured reserve, give them a settlement, and avoid taking up one of the 8 spots earmarked for players eligible to return from IR. It makes sense from a league-wide fairness standpoint, but it's a frustrating outcome for a player like Dyson, who made a huge impact on the Vikings over the course of his 2 weeks in camp.
The other frustrating element is that the length of Dyson's injury settlement has not been reported. That means we don't know exactly when he becomes eligible to rejoin the Vikings. If somebody on the beat or nationally does report the settlement length, it would shed some light on the timeline. For now, Dyson will not be a member of Minnesota for at least 4 weeks, because the injury settlement would have covered at least 1 week's pay. Whatever pay Dyson gets will be added to the salary cap.
The Vikings are in a waiting game to see if Dyson can eventually make his way back to the roster. It's a tough break for a player who looked the part during training camp, and it leaves the edge rusher position thinner than the Vikings would like heading into the early weeks of the season.
