The Minnesota Vikings (6-1) have another huge opportunity ahead of them in the coming months. The Vikings have the chance at the best season in franchise history culminating in a memorable playoff run.
It's not fantasy. The Vikings defense makes a legitimate playoff run a possible reality. But to have any real shot, Minnesota will need to improve its offense, which currently stands as one of the league's worst through eight weeks.
Some have pointed to the quarterback position as the team's greatest liability, but the running game has held Minnesota back in a big way. Now, NFL analysts are urging the Vikings to make a big move before the trade deadline.
Clutch Points' Garrett Kerman suggests that the Vikings need to strongly consider improving their running game before the NFL trade deadline. Kerman specifically mentions the team should go after Jonathan Taylor if it gets the chance to add at running back. Here's some of what he had to write.
"Taylor would give the Vikings a clear offensive identity. He has rushed for over 1,000 yards with Philip Rivers, Carson Wentz, Anthony Richardson, Joe Flacco and Daniel Jones, so he does not depend on the quarterback. ...
Minnesota has been linked to him from the start. The Vikings and Giants are considered the most aggressive teams looking for a back. The price is high and it will take at least a second-round pick plus more. There are expectations that the Giants could meet Indianapolis' demands. If the Vikings want Taylor, they cannot wait for the price to drop.
Taylor would not fix everything. The Vikings could add him and still have trouble blocking for him. But a clear upgrade at running back helps a quarterback who is struggling. If the Colts price Taylor out of reach, Titans back Tony Pollard is a fallback."
To be clear, there isn't much time before the deadline. By November 11, the Vikings roster will be all but set as the trading window closes. Still, there's time to make headway toward a trade for an impact running back. The other team's willingness to part with such running backs might be the biggest hurdle.
Minnesota might not be one player away from a Super Bowl run, but it wouldn't hurt to try and find out. The Vikings will hope to solidify their roster over the next week as the team makes its final moves.
