He never returned, and his status for the Week 9 matchup against the No. 11 Texas Longhorns has been up in the air for several days. Until now, as new reports reveal he will miss the rest of the season.
Taylor must undergo surgery on his injured toe , according to ESPN's Pete Thamel. While the sophomore signal-caller is expected to make a full recovery, he will have to miss the remainder of the 2026-27 campaign.

Not long after the news broke, Taylor issued an official statement regarding his season-ending injury, per Pete Nakos of On3 Sports. The Bulldogs star informed the fanbase he'll be sticking around the rest of the season in a supportive role and wants Mississippi State fans to continue cheering on his teammates. He also suggested that he may remain with the program beyond this year, despite rumors of Taylor possibly entering the transfer portal swirling.
The 19-year-old ends his season with 1,450 passing yards, 17 touchdown passes (currently leads the SEC), and four interceptions while completing 66.2% of his pass attempts. He also accumulated 159 rushing yards and one touchdown on the ground. It's an unfortunate ending to what was a thrilling start to the season, as Taylor garnered Heisman Trophy hype for his performances at the beginning of Mississippi State's campaign.
Redshirt freshman Parker Puckett will step in as the starting quarterback for the Bulldogs for the final five games. Puckett has made four appearances, totaling 368 passing yards, one touchdown, two interceptions, and a 64.1% completion percentage. He takes over with Mississippi State just two wins away from becoming bowl-eligible.
