PHOENIX — Mitch Bratt's dominant performance against the San Diego Padres on Wednesday wasn't just a bounce-back from his previous start.
It was a historic outing that provided much-needed stability for the Arizona Diamondbacks as they continue their push in the National League Wild Card race.

Bratt delivered one of the most efficient starts by a rookie pitcher in modern baseball history, tossing seven innings, allowing just one hit, striking out nine and earning the victory in fewer than 100 pitches.
Since pitches were first tracked in 1988, Bratt is the only rookie left-hander in MLB to record an outing with that combination of numbers. The performance etched his name into the record books, but its value to the Diamondbacks extended far beyond the milestone.

Coming off a loss in his previous start, Bratt responded with the best outing of his young career, helping Arizona avoid losing ground in a tightly contested NL Wild Card race. With every game carrying added importance down the stretch, his performance gave the Diamondbacks a crucial win while keeping their postseason hopes alive.
Bratt's emergence has come at an ideal time for Arizona. Injuries have depleted the club's starting rotation, forcing the rookie into an increasingly important role. Rather than simply filling innings, Bratt has provided quality starts, stabilized the rotation and eased the workload on the bullpen during the most critical stretch of the season.

For a rookie, Bratt has already taken on responsibilities often reserved for veteran pitchers. His latest gem was historic, but its biggest impact may be what it means for a Diamondbacks team relying on him to help navigate the challenges of a playoff push.
