The Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies have both struggled to start the 2026 Major League Baseball season. One MLB insider, ESPN reporter Buster Olney, is floating the idea of a very interesting trade. Olney is projecting the Phillies should consider trading for Red Sox manager Alex Cora.
“Speculation, speculation, speculation. There is nothing behind this that I know of. But I did think of an interesting idea….if the Phillies continue to struggle, I thought a manager who Dave Dombrowski and the Phillies maybe they are interested in, is Alex Cora ,” Olney said on the Baseball Tonight Podcast. “I can’t remember an in-season move with a manager, some kind of trade or something.”
Olney’s other panelists on the podcast thought that would be a wild idea, especially if it happened in-season. It is extremely rare for baseball managers to be traded to other teams, but it has happened.
“It happened at least once, but I think it was the off-season. 1976 or so. The A’s traded Chuck Tanner for (Pirates player) Manny Sanguillen,” David Schoenfield said on the podcast.
Olney is asserting that Cora has a good working relationship with Dombrowski, who is president of baseball operations in Philadelphia. Dombrowski previously worked with Cora, in Boston.
The Phillies are currently mired in a miserable 10-game losing streak. Philadelphia is dead last in the National League East, with a 8-18 record.
The Red Sox are not faring much better . This season Boston is last in the American League East. The Red Sox hold a 9-17 record on the year.
“Alex might want out,” Schoenfield added.
Olney stressed that his view is just speculation. Time will tell in the coming months if Boston and Philadelphia can turn their seasons around. Both teams made the MLB Playoffs in 2025, although neither reached the World Series.
