As the Philadelphia Phillies will be surrounded by rumors throughout the season following the firing of manager Rob Thomson , the team could also be looking to add players to the ball club. With the Phillies streaking under interim manager Don Mattingly , the time could be coming to make a big move, as this MLB insider highlights two players who could be available for many teams.
The report comes after Philadelphia’s president of baseball operations, Dave Dombrowski , teased in a recent press conference that struggling teams with payroll are already having trade discussions, including them. Bob Nightengale of USA Today would speak about Miami Marlins star pitcher Sandy Alcantara and Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran .
“[Dombrowski] said that with so many teams with big payrolls struggling this year, trade talks have already picked up. The hottest commodity at the trade deadline is expected to be Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara , and the Boston Red Sox could trade left-handed hitting outfielder Jarren Duran before the Aug. 3 deadline,” Nightengale wrote.
It remains to be seen if the Phillies are one of the teams that would go after Alcantara or Duran, but there is no doubt that both players would help any team there on.
A look at struggling teams that could make trades, including the Phillies
Looking at the comments from the Phillies’ executive in Dombrowski, he would say last Tuesday how the team and others that have disappointed early have “called around.”
“I’ve had trade conversations earlier than I ever have . . . Other clubs haven’t been doing very well, either. Clubs have called around,” Dombrowski said, via Jon Morosi of MLB.com.
Other than Philadelphia, the big teams that have struggled to start the 2026 season are the Boston Red Sox, New York Mets , Houston Astros , and others. Some have fallen off so much that teams like the Phillies and the Red Sox fired managers Rob Thomson and Alex Cora, respectively.
While New York’s Carlos Mendoza appears “safe,” via Nightengale, Houston’s Joe Espada could be at risk of dismissal. Fans will have to wait to see if either Alcantara or Durran is traded.
