The Milwaukee Brewers have navigated the constraints of having a shoestring budget in MLB to the best of their ability, and year-in, year-out, they manage to compete with the biggest spenders in the big leagues. Following an 8-2 victory over the New York Mets on Thursday, the Brewers moved to 83-51 on the season, which is the best record in MLB at this moment.

The Brewers, of course, are yet to break through even though they've posted a winning record every season since 2017. But they would want to capitalize on their World Series window sooner or later. After all, they experience roster churn every offseason — with star catcher William Contreras potentially the next big name the Brewers have to trade away.
"The Brewers have made it a habit in moving guys a year before they go out into free agency. (Contreras) is going to get an absolute mega deal," Robert Murray of Fansided speculated. "Contreras is going to have a bunch of interest in the winter. I would definitely not rule that one out from happening."

Contreras will indeed be entering the final year of his contract with the Brewers in 2027, making $14.5 million. For as much as Milwaukee would want to keep Contreras at a price point that makes sense for the team, the front office knows the realities of the team's budget and have not been afraid to shop even some of their most established players.

The 28-year-old's overall production on the diamond has declined as well. He peaked as a 5-6 fWAR player towards the beginning of his stint with the Brewers. But in 2026, Contreras' decline from the plate continued and now has him as a 3-ish fWAR catcher.
Nonetheless, Contreras is still one of the best defensive catchers and one of the best game-callers in MLB. The Brewers should have a good market for him should they decide to trade him away this offseason.
