The MLB trade deadline isn't until August 3, but the rumor mill is already heating up for Sandy Alcantara and the Miami Marlins . Especially after the latest comments made by insider Jon Heyman.
During the latest segment of "Jon Heyman's Insider Notebook" on Bleacher Report, Heyman admitted that the 30-year-old right-hander is at the top of his list for potential early trade candidates. Considering the Marlins have numerous solid pitchers on the roster and in the farm system, Heyman believes Alcantara could be a solid trade option for the franchise.
" Sandy Alcantara 's my No. 1 [trade candidate] here on my list," said Heyman…. "He is an outstanding pitcher… We don't know, of course, whether the Marlins are actually going to be sellers. They do have Braxton Garrett in the minor leagues. He seems ready to come up… They have a plethora of pitching, and that always could mean they could be trading somebody."
While the pitching has plenty of exciting names in the rotation, bullpen, and farm system, Miami's offense has been struggling quite a bit this season. Trading Sandy Alcantara for some offense could be what the Marlins need to get back on track in the NL East. Although the club is 9.5 games behind the first-placed Atlanta Braves , they are tied for second place in the division with the Philadelphia Phillies and Washington Nationals .
Alcantara, who is a nine-year veteran, is having a roller coaster of a 2026 season. It's been that way since he won the Cy Young in 2022. He ended the 2023 campaign with a 4.14 ERA, missed the entire 2024 season due to undergoing Tommy John surgery, and then finished 2025 with a career-worst 5.36 ERA.
Through 51.2 innings pitched (leads NL) through eight starts (leads MLB) this year, the two-time All-Star owns a 4.01 ERA and 1.277 WHIP while totaling just 36 strikeouts. Depending on how the next few weeks go for the Marlins, Sandy Alcantara very well could become a legitimate trade candidate, as Jon Heyman suggests.
