The New York Yankees may have identified their preferred targets ahead of the MLB trade deadline , but acquiring either catcher Hunter Goodman or Ryan Jeffers could prove difficult.
According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, the Yankees made it clear they are interested in Colorado Rockies catcher Hunter Goodman and Minnesota Twins catcher Ryan Jeffers. However, both clubs are expected to hold onto their catchers for now.
The Rockies reportedly have no plans to trade Goodman despite sitting at the bottom of the National League standings and being viewed as likely sellers. Goodman, a two-time All-Star, has emerged as one of baseball's top offensive catchers this season, hitting .251 with 27 home runs and 51 RBIs entering the All-Star break. His 27 homers trail only Kyle Schwarber in the National League.

Colorado also has little urgency to move the 26-year-old because he remains under team control through the 2029 season, making him a potential long-term building block.
Jeffers presents a different situation. The Minnesota catcher is an impending free agent, but the Twins reportedly have no interest in moving him unless they fall out of contention. Minnesota entered the All-Star break just two games behind in the American League Central, making a trade unlikely unless the club slips further in the standings.
Jeffers recently returned after having been sidelined by a fractured hamate bone. In 37 games this season, he has batted .295 with seven home runs, 26 RBIs and a .949 OPS.
The Yankees have been linked to catching upgrades by multiple insiders in recent weeks. ESPN's Jeff Passan previously described Jeffers as the "best match" for New York while calling Goodman the club's "dream match." Meanwhile, Jon Heyman of the New York Post suggested Mets backup catcher Luis Torrens could also fit the Yankees' needs.
