How MLS Changed Its All-Star Rules After Messi Suspension Drama
Lionel Messi will miss his third consecutive MLS All-Star Game on Wednesday, but unlike last year, he won't face suspension. The league announced Saturday that Messi and teammate Rodrigo De Paul are excused from the Charlotte showcase following their World Cup final appearance just 10 days ago.
MLS and the MLS Players Association agreed before the 2026 season that clubs would determine appropriate rest periods for players exiting World Cup competition, with Messi and De Paul receiving formal exemptions under this agreement. The decision aligns with FIFPRO's mandatory 21-day rest period following international tournaments.

The 2025 suspension controversy
Last year's All-Star Game created significant tension when MLS suspended Messi and Jordi Alba for withdrawing hours before kickoff, with Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas calling the punishment "draconian" and noting Messi was "extremely upset." The players withdrew without documented injuries, triggering MLS's automatic one-game suspension rule for any selected player who skips without medical excuse.
The league implemented this mandatory participation rule to prevent stars from opting out at will and preserve the All-Star Game's credibility. The policy has precedent: Zlatan Ibrahimović received a suspension in 2018 for citing fatigue rather than injury.
Why the World Cup changed everything
This year's World Cup occurred mid-MLS season, prompting a seven-week league break and pre-arranged exceptions for players reaching the tournament's final stages. Messi and De Paul both played in Argentina's World Cup final loss to Spain on July 19.

The timing created an unprecedented scheduling conflict. With the All-Star Game scheduled just 10 days after the World Cup final, enforcing mandatory participation would have contradicted player welfare protocols that MLS had already agreed to respect.
Structural implications for MLS governance
This exemption reveals how MLS adapts its rigid policies when confronted with global soccer realities. The league maintains strict control over its showcase events—the All-Star Game generates significant revenue and marketing value—but cannot ignore international player welfare standards.
Nine World Cup participants remain on the All-Star roster but must participate since they didn't reach the final stages and don't qualify for mandatory rest. This creates a two-tier system: elite players who reach major tournament finals receive protection, while others face standard obligations.

Current projections suggest Messi and De Paul won't return to Inter Miami until early August. While the league avoided another public relations crisis by granting exemptions, the episode highlights ongoing tension between MLS's desire for control and the realities of managing global superstars operating on international schedules.
