In a surprising turn of events, defensive back Dontay Joyner is back with Maryland football. The move comes nearly a month after head coach Michael Locksley and Joyner decided to mutually part ways.
Joyner, who was sentenced to three years of probation after harassment and telephone misuse charges, was given the chance to speak to the team earlier this week without any coaches present, Locksley stated. At training camp the next day, three senior team leaders approached Locksley to discuss Joyner's status.
"We feel like Dontay has a support system here at Maryland, which is us, and being here is the best thing for him," Locksley recalled during a radio appearance with InsideMDSports.
Locksley proceeded to talk to athletic director Jim Smith and his bosses. They all agreed that bringing Joyner back was a positive and potentially a "life changing" opportunity.
The All-Big Ten honorable mention cornerback started 12 games for the Terps last season, totaling a team-leading eight pass breakups and two picks. Joyner will likely slot opposite Jamare Glasker in Maryland's secondary.
