On the ice, Quinn Hughes has been everything the Minnesota Wild hoped for and more, when they pried him away from Vancouver via blockbuster trade last December. His contract, though, remains unsigned. And with free agency waiting this offseason, the clock on his deal keeps ticking.
Hughes, in the final year of a contract carrying a $7.85 million cap hit, has a standing offer on the table from Minnesota for $20+ million, but that has been there since July 1. However, last week the superstar defenseman hinted at something happening on the contract front soon .
Quinn Hughes on his future with the Minnesota Wild and the possibility of signing a contract extension soon:"I'm where I've always been, and I'm excited right now. My two feet are planted here in Minnesota, and something could happen soon. I'm not really too sure, but I'm really enjoying playing here, and I love playing with Brods [Brodin], Spurgeon, and when Brock [Faber] comes back, there's a lot of things that are set up nicely for me to have success individually and as a team.I think we got a great team. The first thing is you want to get in the playoffs, but I would think that we have a chance to win this year. And then you see when Hynesy [John Hynes] and Kapy [Danny Kaplan] load us up with Kirill [Kaprizov], Boldy, and [Joel Eriksson] Ek, that's probably the most fun hockey I've ever played. Just playing with those guys and going out there and trying to compete with those guys, make plays. That's really, really fun stuff for me.So I'm really enjoying it right now and just taking my time, and we'll see where it goes, but I wouldn't be surprised if something happens soon." #MNWild

Unfortunately, as of Wednesday evening, that's just talk… and not the kind of talks he's had with Minnesota Wild president of hockey operations and general manager, Bill Guerin .
Today, Guerin joined Chad Hartman on The Chad Hartman Show (WCCO Radio), where he was asked for the latest information on Hughes' contract talks. Of course, you have to have information to give it and Billy made it very clear that he has none.
Guerin Undecided on Quinn Hughes Trade Question
If Quinn is ready to sign, he hasn't told the GM, who admitted to Hartman that he hasn't spoken with Hughes or his representation about his contract in "a long time" and that he does not know what the 27-year-old's future holds.
Guerin said Hughes' camp knows where the Wild stand. When pressed on whether a trade could come into play if there's no deal, he didn't rule anything in or out.
Does Bill Guerin need to be looking into trading Quinn Hughes if a contract agreement doesn't come soon?
Bill addressed that with us, got mad at me for bringing up a potential future goalie controversy, and shared what he likes most about his club now.

Guerin : "All I'm doing right now is letting this kid play hockey … whatever will happen will happen … the only person that knows what's going on in Quinn's head is Quinn. And that's OK …To be quite honest with you, I have not talked to them about this in a long time."
Hartman : "How come?"
Guerin : "There's nothing really to talk about right now. What am I going to do? Like, going, you know, please, please, please, please. This, this is a unique situation. I think Quinn needs to wrap his head around a couple of things…
Hartman : Have you made a decision where you're just going to keep him through the rest of the year and see where this goes?
Guerin : Yeah, I mean, I, I haven't really decided. I, at some point, look, at some point in time, I'll have to try to figure things out and see what's best for the, for the team. But, you know, I know one thing's for sure: having Quinn on our team is what's best for the team. And, you know, I don't know. I'll be completely honest. I don't know.
I don't know what's going to happen. I don't know what I'm going to do. There's no date. What we're doing right now is focusing on our team and trying to win hockey games. That's really it. I'm not… I think some people want to make this more complicated than it really is. Being the media. And it's not that complicated.

"I haven't really decided … having Quinn on our team is what's best for the team," Guerin said. "I don't know what's going to happen. I don't know what I'm going to do. There's no date."
Asked whether he cares about getting it done, Guerin stated the obvious: "I care more than anybody." He should. Part of his reputation is on the line.
Canucks fans just chanted "HE'S NOT SIGNING" referencing Quinn Hughes who has yet to extend in MIN 😭 https://t.co/ZTw8BGO5q5

Quinn Hughes Is Producing Like a Star for the Minnesota Wild
The waiting game hasn't slowed Hughes down, thankfully. Through 14 games , he has 18 points (3 goals, 15 assists) while averaging 27:11 of ice time per night.
His 15 assists rank fourth in the NHL behind only Connor McDavid (26), Matthew Tkachuk (16) and Adam Fox (16). His 18 points rank second among all defensemen, trailing only Edmonton's Evan Bouchard (21).
The Wild are 9-3-2 with 20 points, good for first in the Central Division and second in the league. Hughes turned 27 on Oct. 14, and Minnesota's hot start only raises the stakes on keeping him beyond this season.
