β More red cards than goals in the 2026 World Cup opener
The ball rolled, but the red cards stole the spotlight in the first match of the World Cup.
The opening match between Mexico and South Africa will hardly be remembered for the brilliance of its plays, but rather for setting an unfortunate historic record: for the first time in World Cup history, an opening game saw three players sent off.
South Africans Sithole and Zwane , along with Mexican defender César Montes , were shown straight red cards, leaving their teams at a numerical disadvantage.
With these three red cards, the clash between El Tri and Bafana Bafana immediately joins the infamous list of the most ill-disciplined matches in World Cup history.
A record neither team will be bragging about on social media. π β
