Training camp has just begun, and the San Jose Sharks have already been struck by the injury bug.
At the very least, it hasn't hit the big club yet.
San Jose Sharks GM Mike Grier announced a trio of significant injuries on the first day of training camp.
Top prospect Quentin Musty and goaltender Kyle Keyser are out a while with upper-body injuries.
"I wouldn't expect to see them for a couple months at least," Grier said.
Another top prospect, Cam Lund , is out at least a month, also with an upper-body injury.
Musty took a puck to the face from Miko Matikka early in Sunday's Rookie Faceoff game, a San Jose Sharks ' 3-1 win over the Utah Mammoth .
Remarkably, the high-scoring winger came back in the game, and sealed the victory with an empty-net goal.
"He's a hockey player," Grier said.
This injury is another bump in the road to the NHL for the 2023 first-round pick, who's been hampered by injuries, a trade request in juniors, and other issues in his development path. Musty was hoping to turn an elevated commitment to his play away from the puck in this camp to his NHL debut, but that'll have to wait.
"Talking to him, he's a little bit down and disappointed," Grier said. "Not only him, but all the [injured] guys. You got to have a positive attitude and keep your head up."
Free agent Keyser was supposed to add to the San Jose Barracuda 's goaltending depth.
Grier wasn't asked how Keyser suffered his injury, but the GM did disclose that the recent Ilya Samsonov signing was in response to the Keyser injury, perhaps suffered in Captain's Skates.
In the meanwhile, Eric Comrie should trade Cuda starts with Samsonov.
The former Washington Capitals and Toronto Maple Leafs netminder, however, hasn't made it to training camp yet. According to Grier, the Russian, most recently in the KHL, is waiting to be cleared by immigration.
Lund has shown a solid two-way game in the AHL. The 2022 second-round pick, however, was caught by a high hit from Los Angeles Kings defenseman Jared Woolley during Saturday's Rookie Faceoff tilt.
The winger, like Musty, appears to be on the cusp of the NHL, but has also had his share of injuries.
Last year, Lund's season ended with a shoulder injury last February, so at least this injury prognosis is a minor improvement.
On the bright side, Grier did report that center Filip Bystedt and defenseman Mattias Havelid, 2022 first-round and second-round picks, respectively, missed Day 1 of camp with just day-to-day injuries.
Also, 2025 second-round defenseman Leo Sahlin Wallenius participated today, after missing Rookie Faceoff.
