The Washington Nationals have been battling inconsistent pitching all season, but they could have another long term injury to battle through.
Manager Blake Butera said that left handed reliever Mitchell Parker will likely require Tommy John surgery, he told reporters ahead of Tuesday night's game against the Boston Red Sox . While the diagnosis is still awaiting official confirmation, Butera revealed Parker suffered a Grade three sprain of his ulnar collateral ligament that will likely sideline him for the remainder of the 2026 season.
Parker was among the several pitchers the Nationals announced roster moves for on Monday after initially being placed on the 15 day injured list with what was announced as elbow inflammation.

The news also ends a struggling month for Parker in a disappointing stretch to end his 2026 campaign.
Parker first expressed discomfort after exiting in the seventh inning of Sunday's win against the Baltimore Orioles after Richard Lovelady , who was also placed on the 15 day injured list alongside Parker, replaced him to close out the frame.
Through June, Parker owned a 10.13 ERA and allowed six earned runs over his last 3.1 innings and three appearances. He allowed at least two hits in all but two of his nine appearances through the month while tossing just eight strikeouts to three home runs and 20 hits allowed.
Parker entered 2026 with a chance to step into an elevated role as the team's primary closer in a spring training competition alongside Clayton Beeter , though the regular season has far from materialized into what the 26 year old had hoped for.

In his third season with the team, Parker owns a 6.58 ERA and 1.49 WHIP while recording seven holds and one save. Over his career with the Nationals, Parker owns a 5.19 ERA and 1.38 WHIP while tossing over 355 innings, including 39 in 2026.
What moves president of baseball operations Paul Toboni and the front office opt to make with Parker now sidelined long-term is a question given the ongoing concerns out of the bullpen and latest batch of injuries testing an already limited bullpen in Washington.
In the meantime, Parker is slated for arbitration eligibility for the first time in his career this upcoming offseason though it has been reported that he could become a non-tender candidate. With a return now likely in 2028, what materializes for the former fifth round pick in the 2020 draft is a question mark.
