The end of an era may truly be upon the Golden State Warriors . Head coach Steve Kerr ’s contract has expired at the end of the 2025-26 season, and rumors of him leaving his post as the Warriors’ head coach have grown louder than ever. Kerr has been in a high-pressure job for over a decade now, and perhaps it’s time for him to explore other options for his career — especially with Stephen Curry and Draymond Green ’s careers winding down.
However, a familiar gig may be lying in wait for Kerr should he decide to step away from his post as the Warriors’ head coach. According to NBA insider Marc Stein, via Bleacher Report, ESPN is heavily pursuing Kerr, convincing him to return to the commentary desk where he used to be when he called games for TNT before he made the jump to coaching.
While the Warriors are still hoping that Kerr chooses to return to the team for the 2026-27 season, it’s obvious that his time as a head coach is coming to an end, at least briefly.
Considering how strong the bond is between Kerr, Curry, and Green during their time together as the pillars of the Dubs dynasty, one would think that the nine-time NBA champion (five as a player, four as a coach) would decide to time his return to the broadcast crew alongside Curry’s retirement and Green’s departure.
Kerr has already reportedly met with the Warriors’ top brass, and reports have stated that those talks have been “good” and “productive”. One cannot expect otherwise, as Kerr’s working relationship with the front office has always been top-notch.
Should Kerr decide to return to commentating, the Warriors could very well decide to blow it up and start from scratch, especially after they failed to qualify for the 2026 NBA playoffs amid the team’s injury woes.
