The San Antonio Spurs are looking for ways to retool on the margins this offseason after their NBA Finals loss to the New York Knicks last month. The Spurs have remained mostly quiet thus far this summer, but that could change quickly as the free agency period resumes.
Recently, NBA insider Jake Fischer reported on how the Spurs could have interest in Tobias Harris , who had a solid year last season for the Detroit Pistons .
"Pistons free agent Tobias Harris (is) also known to be on San Antonio 's list," reported Fischer on Marc Stein's Substack. Fischer also reported that "There were strong rumblings Tuesday night that San Antonio was only willing to offer a two-year deal to the various forwards they're chasing with the full midlevel exception of $15 million."
One free agent that the Spurs had reported interest in was power forward John Collins , but he recently signed with the Pistons, which some have viewed as a potential replacement for Harris, should Detroit lose him in free agency.
Adding Harris would certainly help shore up the Spurs' wing depth, which was a problem at times during their NBA Finals loss to the Knicks. In that series, the Spurs couldn't rely much on players like Harrison Barnes off the bench, but Harris proved to be still reliable last year for Detroit despite his age, starting on a team that won 60 games and made the second round of the playoffs.
Fischer also mentioned Los Angeles Lakers forward Rui Hachimura as someone that the Spurs had an eye on in free agency, especially now that Los Angeles has allocated significant cap space elsewhere.
In any case, things could start to get busier for the Spurs in free agency over the coming days.
