The North Carolina State football program is looking for a new head coach . NC State has been reportedly looking at former NFL quarterback Philip Rivers . Rivers is inching closer to getting the job, according to a new report.
"The two sides are expected to have further communication in the near future and there's continued momentum at the moment toward Rivers ultimately being the hire, sources tell CBS Sports," reporter Matt Zenitz posted on X, formerly Twitter.
Rivers has never been a college football head coach. He played for the Wolfpack years ago, and his son is committed to joining the NC State program.

It is not a done deal, by any means.
"Nothing final at this point though," Zenitz added about Rivers and the Wolfpack.
Rivers has been a high school football coach. He played for NC State from 2000-2003. He then went on to a long NFL career, although he never won a Super Bowl.

Rivers is not the only person being linked to this job. Another is a head coach that was recently coaching in power 4 football.
"One name the staff has identified as a potential target on the NC State football coaching hot board is James Madison head coach Billy Napier. In his first year at JMU, Napier has the Dukes at 7-1 and in contention for the Group of Six's CFP bid. He spent the prior four years at Florida where he finished one game under .500 (22-23) but had the Gators ranked as high as No. 13 in the AP Poll," CBS Sports recently reported.
The NC State football program fired former head coach Dave Doeren , after a rough start to the 2026 season. Doeren had coached the team for more than a decade. He blamed NIL and the transfer portal for some of the reason why his program has struggled of late.
This season, North Carolina State holds a 4-4 overall record. The Wolfpack next play Duke on Saturday.
