New Nebraska quarterback discusses approach to playing the position
One of Nebraska's new quarterbacks met with the media for the first time as a Husker. UNLV transfer Anthony Colandrea made his first appearance on Wednesday.
Colandrea comes to Nebraska following a breakout junior year with the Rebels. The St. Petersburg, Florida, native finished the 2025 season throwing for 3,459 yards, 23 touchdowns, and nine interceptions with a 65.9 completion percentage.
The former Rebels' play earned him the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year award. Before UNLV, Colandrea played two seasons at Virginia . In 19 games, he totaled 4,083 passing yards, 26 passing touchdowns and 20 interceptions.
While meeting with the assembled media, the new Husker discussed his approach to playing quarterback.
“The way I approach the game is really being a playmaker at the quarterback position. You just got to get players the ball, throw it to the open guy. We got so many guys that can go make plays, and my job is to just get them the ball and let them go make plays.”
Matt Rhule has previously discussed his desire for more mobility at the quarterback position. Former Husker Adam Carriker stated earlier this week on his YouTube show that former coach Tom Osborne told Matt Rhule always to have a quarterback who can make plays with his feet.
Last season, Colandrea ran for 649 yards and 10 touchdowns. The new Husker QB says that using his feet is a big part of how he plays, and that playing in a conference as physical as the Big Ten won't change that.
“I feel like it’s a big deal for quarterbacks being able to run and get out of the pocket. Say your first, second read’s not there, your third read’s not there… To be able to get out of the pocket and go make plays down the field, and give your players the ball."
He now joins a Nebraska team that is looking for a new opening day starter after Dylan Raiola transferred to the Oregon Ducks . The Husker quarterback room also includes sophomore and bowl game starter T.J. Lateef and former Virginia quarterback Daniel Kaelin.
