"We have never seen anything like this" - Kendrick Perkins says teams don't want to face Wembanyama in the playoffs
The San Antonio Spurs have made a lot of believers out of naysayers this season. Sporting an impressive 47-17 record, the Spurs have made it clear that they're ready to take the next step and make a deep playoff run.
After failing to make it to the postseason in each of the last six seasons, the Spurs are primed to join the party and according to former NBA champion turned broadcaster Kendrick Perkins , woe is the team that has to formulate a game plan to stop Victor Wembanyama and his young teammates, who are all hungry for success.
Perk is sold on the Spurs
It's easy to cast doubt on the Spurs' title aspirations. After all, their best player is a 22-year-old Frenchman who has yet to taste postseason action. Meanwhile, the team's second-best player, All-Star guard De'Aaron Fox, has never made it past the first round.
The rest of the young bucks, such as Devin Vassell , Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper , are all talented but still untested in pressure-packed playoff situations.
But for Perkins, none of that matters. He sees Wembanyama and is convinced that he can lead the Spurs to the promised land.
"If Wemby is who we think he is, that man could go get it done," Perkins asserted on "Road Trippin.'"
"It's to the point where I'm completely sold on the San Antonio Spurs. I'm completely sold on Victor Wembanyama. We have never seen anything like this as far as this guy and his talent, what he's doing on the floor. But his leadership — I like his leadership, his want to win, his spirit — it is contagious," he added .
Wemby, a 7'4" man-child, is averaging 23.9 points on 50.5 percent shooting, 11.1 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 1.0 steals and 3.0 blocks per game. But as majestic as those numbers are, Perk said the big man is only starting to scratch the surface of his potential.
"Every single game I'm watching this guy get better. I don't know how you game plan for him in a seven-game series. I don't know what you possibly could do, not at the level that he's playing on right now," Perkins stated.
Feels like OKC all over again
Kendrick furthered that when teams face off against the Spurs, they don't just have to worry about Wembanyama; they have to find ways to shut down the entire crew — a task that has proven daunting even for the best teams in the NBA today.
"You have everybody else on the Spurs that are just following suit, being stars in their roles. They could cut you everywhere but loose. You don't even know where it's coming from," he remarked. "It could be De'Aaron Fox. It could be Keldon Johnson. It could be Harrison Barnes, Dylan Harper, you don't know where it's going to come from that night."
"That's what makes them dangerous. It feels like I'm watching OKC all over again," Perkins conveyed.
There's a checklist teams must follow to build a title-winning squad in the NBA. You need a superstar, a strong supporting cast, and role players that fit perfectly into the system. The Spurs apparently have checked all those boxes this season, and time will tell whether that will translate into a deep playoff run that snags them the Larry O'Brien trophy.
