Newcastle United defender Amar Dedic was at the centre of a major police operation after he and a friend were seen carrying a bow and arrows in the Northumberland countryside.
According to the Daily Mail , Dedic, a Bosnia and Herzegovina international, was the target of a dramatic hunt involving at least six patrol cars – including armed response units – on Wednesday afternoon.
Police confirmed they had responded to "a report of two men carrying a bow and arrows", which were seized when a vehicle was stopped near the exclusive Darras Hall residential estate.
Officers were said to have been satisfied that the equipment was "for recreational use and there was no threat to the public".
Hunting any animal with a bow and arrow or crossbow is illegal in the UK but there is no indication the pair had been doing so.
Police said inquiries into the incident were ongoing.
According to the Daily Mail , by sheer coincidence, Newcastle goalkeeper Mark Gillespie and former defender Paul Dummett arrived at the scene while officers were speaking to Dedic and stopped to offer assistance.
A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "Shortly after 1.55pm on Wednesday, we received a report of two men carrying a bow and arrows while walking along a track by the reservoir on Military Road in the Harlow Hill area.
"Officers attended and subsequently stopped a vehicle in the Darras Hall area and seized a bow and arrows."
Telegraph Sport has been told Newcastle are aware of the incident.
Dedic is not expected to face any disciplinary action and should start the club's Premier League game at Fulham on Saturday.
The 24-year-old has established himself as Newcastle's first-choice right-back since joining them this summer in a £30m move from Benfica.
