Newcastle United and Chelsea have been handed encouragement in their interest in Giorgio Scalvini after the Italy defender admitted he would like to experience playing abroad during his career.
Scalvini recently committed his future to Atalanta by signing a new contract running until 2031. The 22-year-old has spent his entire senior career in Bergamo and remains an important part of the club's plans. Atalanta officially confirmed the extension on September 27.
However, speaking during Italy duty, Scalvini acknowledged that he is open to eventually testing himself in another league.
"I understand those who change clubs and go abroad. One day I'd like to do that to learn new things and new concepts, but I'm already doing it at Atalanta," he said.
The comments could encourage Newcastle and Chelsea, who have both previously shown interest in the centre-back. Newcastle were linked with a move during the summer, while Chelsea have monitored him since 2025. Reports in July suggested Atalanta valued Scalvini at more than €50 million before his latest contract extension.
Scalvini's new deal nevertheless gives Atalanta a strong negotiating position. The defender has already made 144 professional appearances for the club despite his age, having progressed through their academy before establishing himself in the first team.
A move abroad therefore appears to be a longer-term possibility rather than an immediate indication that Scalvini is looking to leave Bergamo. His comments were framed around experiencing a different football culture at some point in his career, rather than a desire to force a transfer.
Newcastle have maintained an interest in the Italian, while Chelsea are also among the Premier League clubs monitoring his situation. Any future approach is likely to require a significant fee given the length of Scalvini's new contract.
For now, Atalanta have secured the defender's commitment until 2031. But Scalvini's willingness to consider football outside Italy could keep the door open for Premier League suitors in the years ahead.
