Newcastle Linked to RC Lens’ £20 Million Player Amid Goalie Search
Newcastle United are going to sign a new goalkeeper this summer, but not every option on their shortlist is aimed at bringing in an instant starter.
While more established names remain under consideration, namely Man City ’s James Trafford and Brighton ’s Bart Verbruggen , The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards reported on Wednesday that RC Lens goalie Robin Risser has emerged as a serious target with a focus on landing a long-term Nick Pope replacement.
The 21-year-old Ligue 1 goalkeeper has impressed in the French league this season, starting regularly and attracting attention from across Europe.
There have been claims in his native country that Newcastle have already made contact with Lens, though those reports have been downplayed internally by Newcastle, per Edwards. Interest, however, seems to be genuine.
According to Edwards’ information, Risser fits the profile Newcastle are targeting for their new goalie, as he’s young, technically strong, and comfortable with the ball on his feet — a key requirement as the club looks to evolve its style of play.
Edwards notes that Risser is viewed as a player with “vast potential,” having represented France at multiple youth levels.
The challenge, however, is experience. Unlike other targets, Risser has only appeared in 31 games this season and none before, playing for Ligue 2 side Red Star last season.
Risser’s profile aligns with Newcastle’s shift toward younger, high-upside signings, but it looks like a transfer for the youngster will depend on whether or not the Magpies believe Pope can still produce for at least one more season.
