The ball is getting punched loose more often in the NFL, and the trend has made one old defensive technique feel new again.

Through the first six weeks of the 2026 season, the league had recorded 235 fumbles, up 28 percent from the same point a year ago, according to Elias Sports Bureau data reported by the New York Post. That increase has brought extra attention to the "Peanut Punch," the technique popularized by former NFL cornerback Charles Tillman: defenders strike at the football with a closed fist to force it free.
Simplifying the idea
The idea is simple. Tackling ends the play; punching at the ball can end the drive. But turning the move into a reliable part of a defense takes practice, timing and control. The NFL has sent teams video examples of legal punches as well as examples that can draw an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
That creates a coaching challenge on both sides of the ball. Defenses want players to attack the ball when the opportunity is there. Offenses have to make sure ball carriers protect it through contact, especially when defenders are targeting the ball instead of wrapping up. Coaches have described ball security as a priority, with some teams giving it more practice time.

Where it started
Tillman's legacy is visible in that shift. His nickname became attached to a play that defensive coaches now teach across the league, years after he built a reputation for forcing fumbles in Chicago. The technique's spread reflects the NFL's constant search for turnovers, where even a small change in how a defender approaches a tackle can swing possession.
The numbers do not prove that the Peanut Punch alone caused the increase. Fumbles can rise for many reasons, including game situations and individual mistakes. But the league's emphasis on teaching the technique shows how seriously teams are taking the opportunity to create turnovers—and how much more urgently offenses must protect the ball.
