The Cleveland Browns have officially named their 53-man roster ahead of the 2026-27 NFL season, with general manager Andrew Berry making multiple shocking decisions after the preseason.
Unfortunately for Browns fans, one of the casualties of the recent roster cutdown period was local hometown hero Luke Floriea. After a dazzling preseason stint, many believed that he could make the final cut. However, the team announced on Sunday that Floriea would be one of the many players cut.
To make matters worse, NFL insider Jeremy Fowler reported on Monday afternoon that the Browns do not intend to sign Floriea to the practice squad.
Floriea's successful preseason
Floriea, a 2025 UDFA signing, was on the Browns' practice squad throughout his entire rookie season. But with head coach Todd Monken taking over the offense and the plentiful amount of turnover on the roster, there was a chance that the former Kent State Golden Flashes standout could have made a push for a roster spot this offseason.
During his three preseason games, Floriea was nothing short of impressive -- finishing his campaign with six catches for 95 yards and three touchdowns. This included a spectacular final preseason showing against the New England Patriots , where he tallied three receptions for 29 yards and two touchdowns in the 37-13 victory .
One of the main reasons why Floriea most likely did not make the original cut was due to his lack of a role on special teams. Berry clearly favored veteran Tylan Wallace , Isaiah Bond , and Malachi Corley , as the three have an impact in the return game, which did not play to Floriea's advantage during roster cutdowns.
In addition to a limited role on special teams, Cleveland has plenty of wide receivers on the current roster that have similar skill sets to Floriea. With the addition of KC Concepcion in the 2026 NFL Draft, along with Bond and veteran Jerry Jeudy remaining on the roster, the Browns' slot position on offense has plenty of depth. This could have been another key reason why Berry and the front office opted not to sign Floriea to the practice squad ahead of the upcoming regular season.
