The Boston Bruins began the 2026-27 season with a 3-0 victory over the New York Rangers, but one major question remains around the team. An NHL analyst has pointed toward Boston's supporting cast and defensive stability as important concerns.
The Bruins are coming off a 45-27-10 regular season that produced 100 points and a fourth-place finish in the Atlantic Division. They reached the playoffs but were eliminated by Buffalo in six games.

Boston added JJ Peterka during the offseason and brought several younger players into bigger roles. However, Charlie McAvoy's six-game suspension creates an immediate challenge, while the team must also prove that last season's offensive production can be maintained.
The Bruins face an early defensive test
Charlie McAvoy's suspension is one of the clearest concerns entering the new season. The NHL suspended the Bruins defenseman for six regular-season games after his slash on Buffalo forward Zach Benson during Game 6 of their first-round playoff series.
The timing matters because McAvoy remains a central part of Boston's defensive structure. He also carries significant responsibility moving the puck and handling difficult matchups, leaving the Bruins without one of their most important defensemen during the opening stretch.

Boston entered the season with McAvoy unavailable and Hampus Lindholm, Will Borgen, Nikita Zadorov, Connor Clifton, Mason Lohrei and Jonathan Aspirot among its defensemen. The group has depth, but replacing McAvoy's overall impact is a different challenge.
Boston needs more from its supporting cast
An ESPN season preview identified Boston's biggest concern as the amount of help its stars receive from the supporting cast. The Bruins relied heavily on several players producing career-level or rebound seasons during their 2025-26 campaign.
Pavel Zacha, Morgan Geekie and Charlie McAvoy all delivered important offensive contributions last season, while Casey Mittelstadt and Viktor Arvidsson also rebounded. Boston finished with 268 goals, ranking 10th among NHL teams in the regular season.

The challenge is sustaining that production rather than assuming it will automatically repeat. Arvidsson is no longer on the roster, while Boston expects players such as Peterka, Mittelstadt, Elias Lindholm and Fraser Minten to help keep the offense productive.
JJ Peterka becomes an important addition
Boston's biggest offseason addition was JJ Peterka, acquired from the Utah Mammoth on June 26 in exchange for the No. 23 pick in the 2026 NHL Draft and a conditional first-round pick in 2028. He is expected to add speed and scoring ability.
Peterka produced 47 points, including 25 goals, in 82 games for Utah last season. That represented a decline from his 68-point campaign with Buffalo in 2024-25, making his performance in Boston one of the season's important storylines.

His debut offered an encouraging early sign. Peterka scored Boston's second goal in the 3-0 win over New York and played on the top line with newly appointed captain David Pastrnak and Elias Lindholm.

Pastrnak remains central to Boston's offense
David Pastrnak enters the season as Boston's captain and offensive centerpiece. The 30-year-old winger recorded 100 points in 77 games during 2025-26, including 29 goals and 71 assists, marking his fourth consecutive 100-point season.
That consistency gives Boston an established offensive foundation, but it also highlights why secondary production matters. Teams can prepare for an elite scorer, making contributions from Peterka, Zacha, Geekie, Mittelstadt and the younger forwards increasingly important.

Pastrnak also has a new leadership responsibility. Boston named him the 28th captain in franchise history on Sept. 27, filling the position that had remained vacant since Brad Marchand was traded to Florida in March 2025.
Jeremy Swayman gives Boston some stability
Goaltending is less of an immediate question after Jeremy Swayman's strong 2025-26 campaign. He went 31-18-4 with a 2.71 goals-against average and .908 save percentage while finishing as a finalist for the Vezina Trophy.
Swayman also started the new season strongly. Against the Rangers, he stopped all 24 shots for his 19th career NHL shutout, helping Boston remain in a scoreless game until the Bruins broke through late in the third period.

His performance could again be important if Boston experiences defensive breakdowns. NHL.com noted that the Bruins allowed 29.7 shots per game last season, making their ability to protect Swayman another factor worth monitoring throughout the campaign.
Elias Lindholm remains a key question
Elias Lindholm represents another part of Boston's supporting cast that could influence the team's ceiling. He recorded 48 points in 69 games last season, but his 5-on-5 production was less impressive than Boston had hoped from a high-paid veteran center.
Lindholm finished his first two seasons in Boston, averaging 47.5 points per season. His contract carries a $7.75 million annual cap hit, while five years remained on the deal entering the offseason, increasing the importance of his contribution.

The opening-night lineup placed Lindholm between Peterka and Pastrnak. If that combination develops into a productive line, Boston could gain greater depth around its top scorer while giving the coaching staff another offensive option.

Young players could change the equation
Boston is also entering the season with several younger players expected to take on larger responsibilities. James Hagens, Fraser Minten and Marat Khusnutdinov are among the forwards the Bruins hope can continue developing within the NHL lineup.
Hagens, selected No. 7 overall in the 2025 NHL Draft, entered the opening-night lineup against New York. Minten made an immediate impact by scoring the game-opening goal, while Peterka followed before Mark Kastelic completed the scoring.

That early contribution does not erase the concerns raised during the preseason, but it gives Boston another route to improved depth. The Bruins do not necessarily need every young player to become a star; consistent contributions could make a meaningful difference.
Boston's Atlantic Division challenge is significant
The Bruins also have little room for an extended adjustment period. Boston finished fourth in the Atlantic Division last season, while the Buffalo Sabres won the division and eliminated the Bruins in the first round.
The division remains highly competitive entering 2026-27. NHL.com identified Boston's ability to develop its younger players and integrate its revamped defense as important questions, while its season preview highlighted the need for sustained offensive production.

Boston's 3-0 opening-night win provided a positive start, but one game cannot answer the larger questions. The Bruins will need to navigate McAvoy's suspension, establish their new defensive combinations, and receive reliable production beyond Pastrnak as the season develops.
Fun fact:The Bruins' 3-0 victory over the Rangers extended Boston's home-opening winning streak to 11 games, tying the NHL record for consecutive home-opening victories.
