Zach Werenski won the Norris Trophy as a member of the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2025-26 as the top defender in the NHL. Now, there are reports that Werenski is going to be leaving the Blue Jackets .
Now, the list of teams that will be going after the top blueliner in the NHL is becoming clear, according to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period.
"The Dallas Stars , Utah Mammoth , Toronto Maple Leafs , Philadelphia Flyers and Anaheim Ducks are among the teams eyeing Werenski and have discussed the possibility with the Blue Jackets," Pagnotta wrote.
The Stars have been connected with Werenski previously and could be interested in sending Thomas Harley in a trade package. Meanwhile, the Ducks have plenty of assets and cap space to bring in Werenski.
Blue Jackets GM Don Waddell is engaging in trade talks, looking to get the deal done sooner rather than later. Still, a deal does not have to get done immediately.
Werenski has informed the team that he is not interested in signing a new deal. The 28-year-old also has a full no-movement clause and a great contract, costing just under $9.6 million. Still, he is under contract for the next two seasons. If the Jackets do not get the deal they want, they can wait. There is a sweet spot, though. Waiting too long could bring down his value, but not waiting for the right deal could leave value on the table.
Regardless, with five teams already known as being interested, there is likely to be a bidding war for Werenski. If that is the case, Columbus will have no problem getting an amazing deal.
