The Nic Claxton injury will keep the Chicago Bulls center out at least two weeks after he tweaked his hamstring during training camp. Head coach Tiago Splitter said Claxton will be re-evaluated in two weeks after the hamstring setback . Claxton is not ruled out for October 21 against Toronto, but the timeline provides no guarantee he will be ready.
Claxton will miss Chicago's preseason after suffering the injury before the team's first game. The October 19 re-evaluation comes only two days before the Bulls' Opening Night against the Toronto Raptors. That timing makes the season opener the biggest question surrounding his recovery.

Claxton averaged 11.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 1.1 blocks across 69 games last season. Available tracking data lists 7.2 contested shots and 1.7 deflections per game. Those defensive numbers show the activity Chicago loses without their projected starting center.
The Bulls lose a mobile defender capable of switching onto ball-handlers and recovering around the basket. Claxton's 1.1 blocks and 3.3% block rate provide additional interior deterrence. That versatility matters because Splitter's system emphasizes defensive flexibility alongside a fast offensive pace.
Offensively, Claxton's absence removes an athletic screen-and-dive option for Josh Giddey. Claxton could have given Giddey a consistent lob target while creating space for Chicago's young forwards. Losing those frontcourt repetitions limits valuable preparation.
The Bulls' training camp developments already emphasized the importance of frontcourt chemistry before Claxton's injury. Caleb Wilson and Matas Buzelis were expected to build chemistry alongside Chicago's new starting center. Claxton's absence now forces those combinations to develop with a different frontcourt rotation.

Jalen Smith is the logical first replacement for Claxton, but the comparison highlights what changes. Smith averaged 10.2 points, 6.7 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and 0.8 blocks across 53 games last season. The statistical comparison shows Smith can produce, but Claxton provides greater defensive mobility and rim-running ability.
Smith also brings legitimate spacing after shooting 37.3% from three-point range last season. Smith posted a 113.0 defensive rating while averaging 0.8 blocks, giving the Bulls a productive alternative without duplicating Claxton's defensive profile. Chicago gains shooting and positional flexibility while sacrificing some switchability.
Splitter has confirmed the adjustment for Wednesday's preseason opener against the Phoenix Suns. Giddey, Buzelis, Wilson, and Norman Powell will start, with "a big" filling the fifth spot. The planned lineup makes Smith a leading option without officially naming him the starter.
Splitter also plans to use nine to 11 players because an eight-man rotation would be "impossible" at Chicago's desired pace. That approach should distribute Claxton's minutes across Smith, Tobe Awaka and other frontcourt players. The rotation plan gives the Bulls flexibility instead of forcing one player to replicate Claxton's entire role.
Zach Collins remains another factor while managing a toe-related soft-tissue injury. Splitter said Collins was not expected to practice while dealing with the issue, making his availability important for Chicago's frontcourt depth. The Collins update gives Smith a clearer path to minutes if Collins remains unavailable.
Awaka and Orlando Robinson also remain available for frontcourt minutes. Awaka averaged 6.6 rebounds and 1.0 block across five Summer League games for the Bulls. Chicago's rotation options give Splitter multiple ways to cover the lost minutes.

October 19 is the key date for Claxton, but the evaluation does not guarantee clearance for Toronto. The short window afterward leaves the Bulls little time to build game conditioning and offensive timing. The recovery timeline therefore keeps October 21 firmly in question.
The latest Nic Claxton injury update points toward uncertainty rather than a definitive Opening Night absence. Chicago could instead prioritize his readiness for the October 24 home game against Washington. That Bulls schedule provides a more comfortable fallback.

The Nic Claxton injury creates a significant preseason problem, but Chicago has multiple ways to manage the missing center minutes. Smith offers the clearest combination of experience, shooting, and immediate availability. The Bulls' broader rotation can absorb additional frontcourt responsibilities while Claxton recovers.
The biggest concern involves continuity rather than simply replacing Claxton's statistics. Giddey loses valuable opportunities to develop his screen-and-lob connection with Chicago's new starting center. The Bulls now have to build that chemistry around Smith or another big before Opening Night.
