Nick Sogard had stepped into a major-league batter's box more than 250 times without hitting a home run. That wait finally ended Wednesday, just as the Boston Red Sox began confronting another difficult roster decision.
Sogard connected during Boston's 7-6, 10-inning loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks . The result prevented a Red Sox sweep, but it could not erase the significance of the swing.
It was Sogard's first home run in the majors.
Over the Monster's game recap highlighted the milestone alongside homers from Mickey Gasper and Jarren Duran . Gasper's blast extended his streak to three games. Sogard's carried a different kind of weight.
He had waited through parts of multiple seasons to produce it.

Sogard has built his case through versatility rather than home-run totals. His official MLB profile lists experience across the infield and outfield, giving Boston a flexible option when injuries or matchups force changes.
That flexibility explains why one homer should not radically alter the club's evaluation. Sogard does not suddenly project as a middle-of-the-order slugger, and a single swing cannot establish a new offensive baseline.
It can still matter.
Players without significant power must find other ways to prevent pitchers from attacking them in the strike zone. Even occasional extra-base damage can alter an at-bat. Sogard's Baseball Savant page offers the deeper contact and batted-ball data Boston can use to determine whether Wednesday represented a mechanical improvement or one well-timed result.
The distinction matters more because of what comes next.
Red Sox Stopped Wearing Yellowâand One Saturday May Reveal Why

The Red Sox expect injured players to rejoin the roster, reducing the number of available bench positions and starts. Sogard cannot control that timetable. He can make the decision uncomfortable by producing whenever Boston calls his name.
Wednesday's homer did exactly that, even in a loss.
The Red Sox must decide how much they value Sogard's ability to cover multiple positions against the offensive upside offered by other options. His first career homer adds another data point, not a definitive answer.
That context makes the timing unusual. On most nights, a first major-league homer provides an uncomplicated celebration. Sogard reached his milestone while playing for a contender with established hitters returning and several reserve players competing for limited opportunities.
Boston will remember the versatility when it assembles its roster. Sogard just gave the club a reason to remember the bat, too.
The ball will become a souvenir. The baseball question remains unresolved. Sogard must treat the achievement as a beginning. His next opportunity may arrive quickly, and another swing could matter more to Boston than this milestone.
After more than 250 plate appearances, his first homer could not guarantee his place. It did ensure that the next Red Sox decision will involve a little more debate.
The milestone arrived late, but its roster impact could appear immediately.
