Hamburg captain Nicolai Remberg criticized former teammate Ransford Königsdörffer after the Mainz attacker celebrated directly in front of the home supporters during Sunday's 5-0 Bundesliga rout at the Volksparkstadion .
An already miserable afternoon for HSV acquired another painful twist in stoppage time. Königsdörffer raced onto a Phillipp Mwene pass, cut inside Sebastiaan Bornauw and finished low into the right corner to make it 5-0 against the club he left this summer.
The 24-year-old then slid on his knees in celebration in front of the Hamburg supporters, prompting an immediate reaction from Remberg.
"I really like him a lot," the HSV skipper remarked in the mixed zone afterwards. "But I'm captain of this club. When someone celebrates like that in front of our fans, that's not right for me. It simply wasn't appropriate."
The exchange supplied an intriguing reversal from only seven months ago. Königsdörffer endured considerable criticism during the first half of HSV's 2025/26 Bundesliga campaign and appeared close to leaving during the January transfer window. After the attacker finally scored his second league goal of the season against Heidenheim in February, Remberg publicly came to his teammate's defense .
"Ransi has taken so much flak," Remberg said at the time. "Everyone has often been against him. It's unfair because he works so hard for the team, running and grinding away."
Remberg also praised Königsdörffer for refusing to buckle under the pressure, adding that "no one deserves it more" after the attacker finally returned to the scoresheet. The breakthrough proved significant. Königsdörffer followed up with a brace against Union Berlin one week later , with then-HSV coach Merlin Polzin insisting that the forward's improvement represented the reward for a longer developmental process.
Königsdörffer eventually finished the campaign with five Bundesliga goals before leaving HSV for Mainz on a free transfer this summer. Sunday consequently represented a very early reunion with both his former club and a captain who had once so forcefully defended him.
Königsdörffer's return to the Volksparkstadion initially produced a considerably warmer reception. The former HSV attacker received applause when his name was announced before kickoff, though some whistles could be heard when he entered as a substitute in the 68th minute.
Remberg acknowledged that Königsdörffer had also been subjected to abuse from sections of the crowd, including comments the midfielder described as "below the belt." The HSV captain nevertheless felt his former teammate went too far after scoring.
"He put up with a lot as well," Remberg said. "But the celebration was a little over the top."
Königsdörffer appeared to make an attempt at reconciliation almost immediately afterward, extending his hand toward Remberg as he returned to his own half.
By that stage, however, the damage had been done.
