Nikita Zadorov linked to the Leafs after agent's comments online
It was a chaotic weekend for Boston Bruins defenseman Nikita Zadorov, and the fallout has somehow dragged the Toronto Maple Leafs into the conversation. What started as a penalty-filled Friday night in Anaheim spiraled into a disciplinary benching, an agent firing shots on social media, and trade speculation that has the hockey world buzzing. Whether any of this actually leads somewhere is another question entirely, but it sure makes for a fun story.
From Roughing Penalties to a Healthy Scratch
On Friday night, Zadorov picked up a double minor for roughing after getting into it with Frank Vatrano not once but twice during the game against the Ducks. Bruins head coach Marco Sturm was clearly not impressed, because the very next night, the 6-foot-7 blueliner found himself watching from the press box as a healthy scratch against the Kings. Sturm was blunt with reporters, confirming the decision was purely disciplinary.

Boston didn't exactly suffer without him either. Jonathan Aspirot stepped in and logged nearly 18 minutes of ice time as the Bruins cruised to a 4-1 victory in Los Angeles. The team sits at a comfortable 7-2-0 and has rattled off five straight wins, which makes it hard to argue they desperately need Zadorov in the lineup every single night.
But the benching clearly didn't sit well with Zadorov's camp. His agent, Dan Milstein, decided to make some noise on social media. When a fan on X suggested that Zadorov wouldn't be treated that way if he were playing for the Maple Leafs, Milstein responded with a simple but loaded reply: "No he would not." That was all it took to set the rumor mill spinning.
What makes this even more interesting is that Milstein also represents Leafs star Kirill Marchenko, so he already has a relationship with the Toronto organization. And this isn't the first time he's fanned the flames of a Zadorov-to-Toronto connection. Back in 2023, when his client was with the Calgary Flames and had requested a trade, Milstein posted on social media telling fans to "get your #LeafsForever tickets today." Insider Chris Johnston had reported around the same time that Zadorov would welcome a move to Toronto. So there's a pattern here, and it's hard to ignore.
Does a Zadorov Trade Actually Make Sense for Toronto?
The timing of all this is notable because the Leafs genuinely are in the market for defensive help. Elliotte Friedman reported over the weekend that Toronto is looking for an impact defenseman and isn't interested in a band-aid solution. With Chris Tanev dealing with an upper-body injury, the pressure on the Leafs' blue line has only increased.

Zadorov certainly brings qualities that Toronto's defense has been lacking. He's a physically imposing presence who has averaged roughly 200 hits and 100 blocked shots per season over the past two years. In a playoff series, that kind of player can change the tone of games. The appeal is obvious.
But there are some serious red flags that come with the package. Zadorov has led the NHL in penalty minutes in each of the last two seasons, and he already had 29 PIM through just eight games this year. He's 31 years old, shoots left when Toronto's bigger need is on the right side following Tanev's injury, and carries a $5 million cap hit that runs all the way through 2029-30. That's a significant long-term commitment for a player whose game relies heavily on physicality.
Hockey analyst Jesse Blake was particularly skeptical about the fit. He argued there's simply no way GM John Chayka looks at a 31-year-old penalty magnet and sees a solution to what ails the Leafs. Blake pointed out that Toronto isn't looking for a stopgap and that Zadorov doesn't represent a long-term answer on the back end. Toronto has allowed 32 goals already this season, and adding a player who spends as much time in the box as Zadorov does might create more problems than it solves.
The cap situation is tricky too. The Leafs have roughly $4 million in available space, which falls short of Zadorov's full hit. Boston would likely need to retain salary to make any deal work, but asking a division rival to eat cap charges through 2030 would undoubtedly drive up the trade price. And the Bruins, currently one of the best teams in the league, have zero incentive to do Toronto any favors.

It's also worth emphasizing what this situation actually is and what it isn't. Milstein never publicly requested a trade. There are no reports of any direct negotiations between Boston and Toronto. This is an agent making a pointed comment on social media that happened to collide with a well-documented need on the Leafs' roster. It's smoke, but nobody has confirmed any fire just yet. The real things to watch going forward are whether Zadorov slides back into the Bruins lineup without issue, whether Milstein continues to stir the pot, and most importantly, whether any credible reporter surfaces actual trade discussions between the two clubs.
