Age/Experience: 19, 11 AHL games.
When the Detroit Red Wings were scouting Eddie Genborg , they quickly found out that everyone wanted the gritty Swede on their side.
"We have a question at the (NHL Scouting) Combine," Detroit director of amateur scouting Kris Draper explained. "We always ask players, if you're able to take one or two teammates with you to the NHL, who would you take? And it was unanimous that Eddie was that guy for everyone.

"Most of the guys on the Swedish team were saying they wanted to play with Eddie."
So the Red Wings opted to go with the flow and get with the trend. They decided to draft Genborg .
He checks off a lot of boxes for them. Genborg is hard to play against. He goes to the net and scores in the dirty areas. He makes his living at the net front and working the corners. Board meetings are among his favorite places on the ice.
Last Season
Genborg scored nine goals and was third in scoring for Timra of Sweden's SHL with 25 points. He helped Sweden win the gold medal at the IIHF World Junior Championship.

A highlight of his SHL season was a devastating open-ice hit he delivered on fellow Red Wings prospect Anton Johansson of Leksand.
He got a late-season look with the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins and did not disappoint. Genborg counted 1-2-3 totals in 11 games and was a plus-two. Unfortunately, he was hurt in the first game of the AHL playoffs. The effects of that undisclosed injury continue to bother the young Swede.
Three Reasons Why Genborg Will Play in the NHL

He's an agitating presence. Genborg is a going concern. He will antagonize other teams.

The kid can score. No, Genborg won't be a 30-40 goal scorer as an NHLer. But 13-15 goals per year and being hard to play against will keep you in the league for a long time.

His physical play. Genborg isn't merely a rat. He delivers massive body checks that can change the momentum of a game.
What May Hold Him Back
Genborg faces the same question that dogs many up-and-comers. Can he score enough at the NHL level? There's also the worry whether his energetic, fearless style of play will make him more susceptible to injury.

Genborg has one year remaining on his SHL contract with Timra, so expect him to play in Sweden again this season. As soon as Timra's campaign is done, he'll be back in Grand Rapids, helping the Griffins.
He'll need at least one full season of AHL action before Genborg can even be viewed as being on the NHL horizon.
