The San Antonio Spurs survived the early exit of Victor Wembanyama on Monday to secure their 60th win of the season, beating the Philadelphia 76ers , 115-102, at Frost Bank Center.
Wembanyama left the game in the second quarter due to a rib injury. He was later ruled out for the remainder of the contest. He finished with 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting, five rebounds, and three blocks in 16 minutes.
Multiple players stepped up for the Spurs in Wembanyama's absence. Stephon Castle had a triple-double of 19 points, 10 rebounds, and 13 assists, while Dylan Harper added 17 points, three rebounds, and four assists off the bench.
De'Aaron Fox, Keldon Johnson , and Luke Kornet also scored in twin digits, underscoring San Antonio 's balanced attack.
The last time the Spurs reached 60 wins was in the 2016-2017 season, with Kawhi Leonard , LaMarcus Aldridge , Tony Parker , Manu Ginobili , and Pau Gasol leading the squad. They were swept by the Golden State Warriors in the conference finals.
The Spurs improved to 60-19, including 30-7 at home. It is a dramatic jump from last season, wherein they only had 34 wins and missed the playoffs for the sixth straight year.
San Antonio finally ended the drought this season , including securing homecourt advantage in the first round.
The Spurs still have a slim chance to steal the top seed in the Western Conference from the Oklahoma City Thunder .
Meanwhile, Wembanyama needs to play for at least 20 minutes in one of their remaining three games to remain eligible for the individual awards. He is a frontrunner for MVP, Defensive Player of the Year, the All-NBA Team, and the All-Defensive Team.
