Nolan Gorman is returning to the St. Louis Cardinals at an unfortunate time for the club.
The Cardinals are recalling the infielder from Triple-A Memphis ahead of Tuesday's series opener against the Baltimore Orioles , with shortstop Masyn Winn expected to be placed on the 10-day Injured List because of a thumb injury.
The roster move was reported by Belleville News-Democrat journalist Jeff Jones on X.
Winn's absence creates a significant hole for St. Louis after he established himself as a regular presence in the lineup and one of the team's most reliable defensive players. He has appeared in 122 games this season, batting .238 with five home runs, 19 doubles, 51 RBIs and 10 stolen bases.
The Cardinals will now have to adjust their infield alignment while Winn recovers. JJ Wetherholt is expected to take on additional responsibilities at shortstop, creating an opportunity for Gorman to provide more offensive production elsewhere on the roster.
Gorman returns to the majors after being sent to Memphis in June following a difficult offensive stretch. He hit .194/.279/.318 with seven home runs across 62 games before his demotion.
His work in the minors, however, gave the Cardinals reason to bring him back. Gorman hit seven home runs and posted a .902 OPS during an impressive August stretch at Triple-A, giving the club hope that adjustments he made there can carry over against major league pitching.

The timing puts Gorman in position to contribute during an important part of the Cardinals' season. St. Louis entered Tuesday at 66-66, sitting third in the National League Central behind the Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs .

While Gorman cannot directly replace everything Winn provides defensively, his left-handed power could give the lineup a needed boost. The Cardinals will need that production if they hope to remain competitive while their starting shortstop is unavailable.
For Gorman, the return represents an opportunity to reset his season. His performance in Memphis earned another chance, and Winn's injury means the Cardinals may need him to make an impact immediately.
