It has not been the best offseason for North Carolina football coach Bill Belichick . He was snubbed by the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and Belichick has lost some star commits . This is all coming off a disastrous first season with the Tar Heels.

If the whole coaching football thing does not work out for the three-time AP NFL Coach of the Year and six-time Super Bowl Champion, he may have a new job coaching first base for the Savannah Bananas.

As Belichick was introduced to the North Carolina faithful at Kenan Memorial Stadium to take his spot at first base, the over 50,000 fans gave him a massive ovation. He then joined in on the fun, challenging a double-play call at first base. He argued with the umpire and threw a yellow challenge flag, leading to the Bananas’ runner being called safe.

Saturday was the first of two games being played in Chapel Hill for the Banana’s, both of them being sell-out crowds, which has become customary for the travelling show.

The Bananas were founded in 2016 as part of the Coastal Plain League, a collegiate summer baseball league. In 2018, they broke off from the league and created a set of alternative rules, known as Banana Ball. They initially played intra-squad exhibition games before growing to hit the road, facing other teams under the same set of rules. In 2026, the Banana Ball Championship League will visit 75 stadiums and kick off its season on February 26.

The Bananas defeated the Tailgaters 6-5 on Saturday. After the trip to North Carolina, they will return to the Historic Grayson Stadium in Savannah, but an opponent has yet to be announced.
