The North Carolina Tar Heels began the 2026 college football season strong, boasting a two-game winning streak under head coach Bill Belichick. However, their preparations for a critical ACC opener against the Clemson Tigers faced a significant setback when star senior defensive end Melkart Abou Jaoude appeared on the injury report as questionable due to a hand and wrist injury sustained during the previous victory over TCU.

Just hours before kickoff, sources provided clarity regarding his availability, revealing a troubling development for the defensive front. According to ESPN insider Pete Thamel on X, North Carolina is expected to play without their star defender Melkart Abou Jaoude against Clemson. Thamel noted that Abou Jaoude is still dealing with the hand and wrist injury from the TCU game, having been previously listed as questionable. His absence leaves a significant void, as he led the ACC in sacks per game last year and is UNC's top defender.

Losing a player of his caliber presents a major challenge for the Tar Heels' defense as they try to contain Clemson's high-powered offense at Memorial Stadium. While Bill Belichick and his coaching staff will rely on the remaining depth players to step up in his absence, navigating a hostile road environment without the conference's premier pass rusher will require a collective team effort to maintain North Carolina's undefeated season.
