Notre Dame football
has a chance to seal the deal with a dynamic local star. The Fighting Irish took a couple of massive steps toward doing so.
With the recruiting momentum that Notre Dame
has been riding over the last several weeks, it is hard not to get excited about the class that head coach Marcus Freeman
and the Fighting Irish could end up putting together in 2027. That has included several commitments this offseason, and more are on the horizon.

One talented linebacker to keep a close eye on is 2027 Chicago (Ill.) Mount Carmel linebacker Roman Igwebuike
. He is a local talent with a ton of upside and all the potential in the world. After failing to make an impact in this recruitment early on, Notre Dame has done a tremendous job recently, especially with Igwebuike's most recent visit. Some now view them as his favorite heading down the stretch.
The Irish staff received two massive pieces of news this week, which include Igwebuike having Notre Dame in his top-five schools list. They were joined by Tennessee
, Clemson, Indiana
, and Missouri
in that top group. Igwebuike will also be committing on July 11, meaning there is now a light at the end of the tunnel.

Notre Dame currently holds a commitment from 2027 Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy linebacker Amarii Irvin
, who was a good start to the class. The team will still want to sign at least one more linebacker to feel good about numbers. Igwebuike is on the short list of talented options that the team hopes to close on.
Roman Igwebuike's recruiting background
Igwebuike is considered to be a four-star player and a Top-200 recruit by multiple of the major recruiting platforms right now. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, the talented linebacker currently ranks as the No. 149 overall player, the No. 11 linebacker, and the No. 8 player from the state of Illinois
for the 2027 recruiting class. Keeping top talent "at home" should always be a top priority for the Irish staff.

A long list of impressive programs has been pursuing him, over 40 of them to be exact. Some of the top offers for the Chicago native include the Fighting Irish, Georgia, Ohio State, Oregon
, Michigan
, Texas
, Oklahoma
, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Miami, USC, Florida
, Auburn, Florida State
, Nebraska
, Arizona State, Arkansas
, Louisville
, Iowa State, Kentucky
, Georgia Tech
, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota
, Missouri, NC State, Mississippi State, Maryland
, Illinois, Kansas State, Syracuse, Boston College
, Vanderbilt, Wisconsin
, Washington, West Virginia, Baylor, Kansas, and Purdue
, among others.
Leading one of the top programs in high school football, Mount Carmel is loaded with next-level talent. The 6-3, 220-pound linebacker is one of the team's top overall talents, which is saying something. He has the combination of size, explosiveness, and physicality to become a stellar inside linebacker on the next level. The versatility that Igwebuike brings is extraordinary.
