Is Notre Dame a legitimate championship contender this season? We will know the answer to that question very soon.
Notre Dame still has time to salvage its 2026 season, but the next three weeks will reveal whether Marcus Freeman's team is capable of doing something meaningful with it.
The Fighting Irish are coming off a frustrating 28-24 loss to BYU, a result that leaves plenty of questions heading into the final stretch. Now, after a bye week, Notre Dame gets a chance to reset against Navy before hosting No. 1 Miami on November 7. Boston College follows the Hurricanes, giving the Irish three very different tests in a short period of time.
On paper, Notre Dame should beat Navy and Boston College. Miami is a different story, especially with the season potentially hanging in the balance.
But the final record won't tell the whole story. How Notre Dame responds to adversity, whether it can rise to the occasion against an elite opponent, and how it handles success if it knocks off the Hurricanes will say just as much about Freeman's program as the scoreboard.
This is the stretch where Notre Dame needs to show what kind of team it really is.
The first test is Navy, and Notre Dame cannot afford to overlook it.
Coming off a 28-24 loss to BYU, the Irish should have plenty of motivation. The bye week provided an opportunity to get healthy, correct mistakes, and prepare for the most important part of the schedule. There is no reason for Notre Dame to come out flat against Navy, particularly with Miami waiting on the other side.
Navy is an opponent Notre Dame should be able to handle easily if it plays to its capabilities. That doesn't mean the Midshipmen can simply be dismissed.
Their option offense forces defenses to stay disciplined, handle assignments, and avoid the kind of mental mistakes that can turn a comfortable afternoon into a frustrating one. Against Navy, one defender chasing the wrong player or a missed tackle in the second level can create a big play.
That's why this matchup matters for Notre Dame's defense. The Irish need to show that they're prepared, assignment-sound, and capable of controlling a game against an opponent they should beat.
Navy's offense presents a different challenge from a conventional passing attack, but the expectation should remain the same: Get off the field, limit explosive plays, and make the Midshipmen work for every yard.
The other priority is getting the offense back on track. Losing 28-24 to BYU means Notre Dame came up short in a game it needed. Against Navy, the Irish should establish control early, avoid putting themselves behind the chains, and finish drives with touchdowns instead of settling for field goals. They cannot afford to spend the afternoon making a supposedly inferior opponent believe it has a chance.
Freeman also needs to see the right mentality from his team. Notre Dame has had a week to sit with the BYU loss. The response should be obvious from the opening series. Play with urgency, take care of the football and put the game away when opportunities arise.
A win over Navy won't suddenly erase the concerns surrounding this team. But a sluggish performance would create even more of them. Notre Dame needs a convincing response, not just another result to put in the win column.
November 7 | Notre Dame Stadium | Miami enters ranked No. 1
Everything changes when Miami comes to South Bend.
The Hurricanes aren't just another ranked opponent on Notre Dame's schedule. They're the No. 1 team in the country, and this is the kind of game that can change the entire conversation around Freeman and his program.
A win would put the Irish right back in the national championship favorite picture. A loss would leave them needing help and facing serious questions about whether they're good enough to compete with the best teams in the country.
Notre Dame entered the BYU game with a chance to make a statement. Instead, it fell behind 21-10 at halftime before fighting back in the second half and ultimately losing 28-24. The Irish showed they could respond, but the slow start and defensive lapses proved costly.
That has to be the biggest takeaway heading into Miami. Notre Dame cannot spend an entire half trying to find its footing against an opponent of this caliber. The Hurricanes will have the talent to punish mistakes, and the Irish need to be ready from the opening kickoff.
Quarterback CJ Carr will be under the spotlight, too. The BYU loss was a difficult one for a young quarterback to absorb, especially with the game coming down to the final moments.
Notre Dame needs Carr to play with confidence, make sound decisions, and deliver when the offense needs a drive. He doesn't have to be perfect, but the Irish can't afford turnovers or wasted possessions against a team like Miami.
The same goes for the defense. Notre Dame needs to create pressure, tackle well in space, and get off the field on third down. The Irish cannot allow Miami to dictate the pace of the game or repeatedly turn manageable situations into explosive plays. If the defense can make the Hurricanes work for everything, Notre Dame has a chance to keep the game within reach late.
And then there's the setting. Miami coming to Notre Dame Stadium on November 7 gives the Irish a chance to deliver a signature home win in front of a national audience. This is exactly the type of game recruits want to see, and exactly the type of moment a program trying to establish itself among the sport's elite needs to seize.
Freeman has built a team capable of winning big games, but the question is whether Notre Dame can consistently perform at that level when the stakes are highest. The BYU loss showed the Irish still have things to clean up. Miami will show whether they can correct those issues quickly enough.
If Notre Dame beats Miami, the conversation around this team changes overnight. The Irish would have a marquee victory to put alongside their strong start and a reason to believe they can make a serious playoff run. If they lose, the BYU game will look even more costly.
This is the opportunity Notre Dame has been waiting for. Now it has to take advantage of it.
November 14 | Notre Dame Stadium
Boston College might not have the same talent or national profile as Miami, but that doesn't mean the game is without danger.
In fact, the timing makes this matchup particularly interesting. If Notre Dame beats the Hurricanes, the Irish will head into the Boston College game riding an emotional high. They'll have just knocked off the No. 1 team in the country, revived their playoff hopes, and given their fans a reason to believe again.
Can they handle that success?
It's a fair question, especially for a team that needs to show it can be consistent. Beating Miami would be a tremendous accomplishment, but it would mean very little if Notre Dame followed it up with a flat performance against Boston College. The Irish cannot afford to treat the Eagles as a letdown game after a potential season-defining win.
This is where Freeman's leadership becomes just as important as his game planning. His job would be to make sure the locker room celebrates the Miami victory without allowing it to become a distraction. The message needs to be simple: One big win doesn't accomplish the ultimate goal, and the next game still counts.
Notre Dame should have the advantage against Boston College, particularly at home. But rivalry games can become uncomfortable when a favorite loses focus, starts slowly, or makes unforced errors. If the Irish are coming off a win over Miami, they need to avoid the temptation to believe the hard part of the schedule is behind them.
The matchup also offers a chance to evaluate Notre Dame's maturity.
Can the offense maintain its rhythm after an emotional week? Can the defense play with the same discipline it needed against Miami? Can the coaching staff keep the team focused on the opponent in front of it rather than the national attention that comes with beating the No. 1 team?
Those aren't small questions. Good teams win games they're expected to win. Great teams do it consistently, even when the previous week brought a massive victory, and the next opponent doesn't command the same attention.
Of course, if Notre Dame loses to Miami, Boston College becomes a different kind of test. The Irish would need to respond to another major disappointment and avoid letting one loss turn into two. Either way, the Eagles game will reveal something about the team's mental toughness.
Freeman and Notre Dame have three very different challenges ahead. Navy tests preparation and discipline. Miami tests whether the Irish can compete with the best team in the country. Boston College tests whether they can stay focused, regardless of what happens the week before.
The stakes are significant. Notre Dame entered the BYU game 6-0 and ranked No. 2 nationally, but the 28-24 defeat dropped the Irish to 6-1 and No. 5 in the AP poll. The margin for error in the playoff race has narrowed, making every remaining game more important. College Football at Sports-Reference.com
A win over Navy is the baseline expectation. Beating Miami would be the kind of result that changes the outlook for the entire season. Taking care of Boston College afterward would demonstrate that Notre Dame has the focus and maturity required to turn a big victory into sustained momentum.
That's what Freeman needs to get out of this stretch. Not just wins, but evidence that his team has learned from the BYU loss and can handle different types of pressure.
Notre Dame doesn't need to be perfect over the next three weeks. It needs to be prepared, disciplined, and mentally consistent. It needs its best players to deliver in the biggest moments, and it needs to stop giving opponents opportunities to hang around in games the Irish should control.
The Navy game should tell us whether Notre Dame has responded to adversity. Miami will tell us whether the Irish are truly capable of beating an elite team. Boston College will tell us whether they can handle success - or bounce back if things don't go their way.
By the time those three games are over, we'll have a much clearer picture of Freeman's team and its ceiling in 2026. The opportunity is still there. Now Notre Dame has to prove it's ready for it.
