Oklahoma football cruised to a 51-0 win over UTEP on Friday. Quarterback John Mateer threw for 225 yards and three touchdowns in what was a strong performance. Mateer played well , but he will obviously face stronger competition as the season moves forward. Oklahoma features a good team as well, which will only help the quarterback. Former NFL quarterback Chase Daniel believes Mateer may be a Heisman Trophy candidate this season.

"It's a joke of a schedule and I love John Mateer," Daniel said. "… And I think for me, John Mateer is a dark horse Heisman candidate and I think the reason because of it is this schedule."
Daniel is a fan of Mateer, but he also believes Oklahoma's "joke of a schedule" will help the QB make a Heisman push. They may have not had much trouble against UTEP, but this Oklahoma football squad will face an uphill battle on its journey to the College Football Playoff. In fact, according to Daniels, it is the second toughest schedule in the country.

The Sooners' ranked games this season on the schedule are against No. 16 Michigan, No. 3 Georgia, No. 5 Texas, No. 9 Ole Miss, No. 8 Texas A&M and No. 25 Missouri. They face Georgia and Texas in back-to-back games on September 26 and October 10. Oklahoma will later finish their season with three consecutive games against ranked teams in Ole Miss, Texas A&M and Missouri.

Daniel thinks Mateer will be a legitimate Heisman Trophy candidate if he can keep the Sooners competitive despite the challenging schedule. It makes sense without question. Mateer will have to at least be in the conversation if he plays well. The good news for Oklahoma is that they are ranked No. 10 overall, so they will be ready for the difficult matchups.
