What You Need To Know
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Oklahoma's season is already bruised. Saturday in Starkville will show whether it is still competitive or just surviving.
The Sooners head to Davis Wade Stadium at 2:30 p.m. CT on SEC Network for a first-ever meeting with Mississippi State, the only SEC program Oklahoma had never played in football.
That novelty would matter more if the Sooners were rolling. Instead they are 3-3 and 1-2 in the league after a self-inflicted home loss to Kentucky , and every remaining game now carries the same weight: stop the slide or accept that the year has already slipped away.
Mississippi State sits at 4-2 and 2-2, receiving votes, and comes in with its own problems. The Bulldogs have had injury questions at quarterback and running back, which only puts more pressure on the one offensive piece Oklahoma cannot lose track of: Anthony Evans III .
Even so, this is still a true road SEC game in October. Those do not care about narratives. They care about turnovers, third downs, and whether the visiting team can function when the stadium gets loud.
There is no shortage of crimson in the home sideline's background. Jeff Lebby was an Oklahoma offensive lineman in the 2002 signing class, later a longtime staffer, and then Brent Venables ' offensive coordinator in 2022 and 2023. His 2023 Sooners ranked among the national leaders in total offense, scoring, and passing. Now he is trying to beat the program that helped build him.
That is only the start of it. Mississippi State AD Zac Selmon is a Norman native with deep Selmon family roots at OU. Offensive line coach Phil Loadholt and tight ends coach Jon Cooper both played for the Sooners and later worked on staff in Norman. The Bulldogs even have former OU players on the roster.
So if this game needed extra edge, the shared history already supplied it.
For Oklahoma, the more useful version of that edge is simpler: Lebby knows what Venables' defense wants to do. Venables knows what Lebby likes to manufacture on offense.
Oklahoma still travels with a real defenseIf the Sooners are going to leave Starkville with a win, it starts where almost every good night has started this season. The defense remains one of the best units in the country by the numbers that actually travel.
Oklahoma leads the nation by allowing just 13.0 first downs per game. The Sooners also rank among the national leaders in third-down defense, total defense, pass defense, red-zone defense, and sacks. Opponents have scored on only 17 of 70 possessions. The second-half profile is still excellent. And all 14 defensive starters began their college careers at Oklahoma, which matters when a road crowd is trying to speed a visitor up.
Owen Heinecke continues to lead the tackle chart. Jake Kreul just announced himself with a true freshman record 2.5 sacks against Kentucky. Taylor Wein, David Stone, Adepoju Adebawore, Peyton Bowen, and the rest of that front-to-back group still give Oklahoma a chance in any game that stays clean. The issue is that too many games have not stayed clean.
That is the split screen of this whole season. Against Texas, Oklahoma had two takeaways, no giveaways, and won the turnover battle in a signature rivalry result. Against Georgia and Kentucky , the Sooners combined for two takeaways and eight giveaways and got crushed in points off turnovers. The defense can keep Oklahoma in the fight. It cannot keep covering for free possessions forever.
Mississippi State's offense becomes a lot more dangerous when Evans is the clear focal point, and that is exactly what Oklahoma should expect if the Bulldogs are short-handed elsewhere. Evans is the space player in that attack: fast, productive, and built for manufactured touches. Screens, jet motion, quick access throws, deep shots off play-action, those are the ways he hurts people. He already has 47 catches for 614 yards and five touchdowns this season, and the Alabama tape showed how quickly a game can start running through him.
The Sooners have to be physical at the line, crowded on the short stuff, and disciplined over the top. Soft cushions and lazy leverage are how speed receivers settle into a rhythm. Oklahoma needs inside leverage on the easy throws, help over the top on the vertical shots, and enough front-seven disruption to keep a backup quarterback from playing comfortable football. Evans does not have to be erased. He does have to be made into a contested-catch player instead of a yards-after-catch player.
If Oklahoma does that, Mississippi State's margin shrinks. If it does not, the afternoon becomes one mismatched coverage after another.
That brings the conversation back to the uncomfortable part of Oklahoma's team. The defense is not the reason the Sooners are 3-3. The offense and the ball security are.
John Mateer has completed 65 percent of his passes for 1,308 yards and nine touchdowns, but the seven interceptions and the turnover total around him are why the fan base is restless. Venables has stuck with him publicly. The Kentucky tape is still why people are arguing about it. Oklahoma can move the ball in stretches. What it has not done consistently enough is finish drives without handing momentum back.
There are pieces worth trusting.
Isaiah Sategna remains the top wideout and all-purpose threat. Rocky Beers has been one of the better transfer additions on the roster and leads the SEC in receiving yards per game among tight ends. Manny Choice just forced his way into the conversation with a 98-yard night against Kentucky. Lloyd Avant has given the run game a pulse at times.
The problem is the supporting structure around all of that has been shaky, especially on the offensive line.
Injuries up front have wrecked continuity. Michael Fasusi has been out since the opener. Eddy Pierre-Louis and Heath Ozaeta have missed time. Ryan Fodje has been banged up. When a line is that unsettled, every road game gets harder, because the visitor has less room for negative plays and second-and-long recovery.
Oklahoma does not need perfection in Starkville. It needs manageable down and distance, fewer empty possessions, and enough balance to keep the defense from living on an island.
There is a temptation to overstate Saturday because the Kentucky loss felt so final. The healthier read is more practical. Oklahoma's path to the games that define December already looks bleak. That does not make Starkville meaningless. A road win would stabilize the locker room, reward a defense that keeps doing its job, and prove the Sooners can still handle an SEC environment after a gut-punch loss. A third conference defeat would push the season even deeper into damage-control mode.
The schedule around this game is still unforgiving. Oklahoma has already seen Michigan, Georgia, Texas, and Kentucky. Florida, Ole Miss, and Missouri are still waiting. That is why this one matters in the short term more than the long-term bracket math. The Sooners need evidence that they can respond.
Last season, Oklahoma went 3-0 on the SEC road and won ugly, physical games by taking care of the football and trusting the defense. That formula still fits this roster better than any shot-for-shot offensive identity. Keep Evans from becoming the whole Mississippi State game plan. Make the Bulldogs drive the hard way. Take the points when they are there. Stop donating possessions.
Starkville will not care that Oklahoma beat Texas two weeks ago. It will not care that the defense ranks among the national leaders. It will only care whether the Sooners can finally put together a complete road performance.
For a team trying to keep its season from hardening into disappointment, that is more than enough reason to treat Saturday like a must-answer game.
